Cork GAA imposes 12‑week ban on Deputy County Mayor Finbarr Harrington

Deputy Mayor of County Cork and Garnish GAA chairman Finbarr Harrington has received a 12-week suspension following a misconduct hearing conducted by Cork GAA.

The sanction relates to a Junior B football championship fixture played on May 9. 

Garnish had been hoping to take momentum from the game itself, but their defeat to Castlelyons in Ballingeary — losing out by a single point — compounded the disappointment around the incident.

According to the Cork GAA County Board’s latest progress report, the suspension was imposed under Rule 7.2(e), which covers misconduct “considered to have discredited the Association.” 

The rule allows for more severe penalties — including debarment or expulsion — in certain circumstances. Harrington’s 12-week ban is therefore four weeks above the minimum threshold set out in the rule.

Harrington took up the position of Deputy Mayor earlier this year as part of Cork County Council’s annual rotation of mayoral roles. 

The post is largely ceremonial but includes representing the county at official functions, community events and civic engagements. His suspension from GAA activity does not affect his standing on the Council.

A long-serving member of Garnish GAA, Harrington has held several roles within the club over the years. He is currently serving as chairman, having replaced Ollie Rue O’Sullivan.
