East Cork JAHC roundup: Carraig na bhFear, Dungourney and Carrigtwohill start with wins

The East Cork Oil Junior A Hurling Championship first round began with a bang as Killeagh overpowered a Seamus Harnedy-inspired St Ita’s, while elsewhere, Carraig na bhFear survived a nervy finish against Midleton. 

Carraig na bhFear 0-18 

Midleton 1-14 

Both outfits were missing a number of key players, but Carraig were in control at the break in Caherlag, leading 0-12 to 0-6.

The Magpies goaled in the second half through Padraig Nagle, while Josh Hogan and Alan Power kept them in touch from placed balls. They got the margin down to one and had a long distance free to level it, but couldn’t convert at the death.

Dungourney got off to a winning start in their first year up, defeating Bride Rovers by five in Castlelyons.

It had been a tense affair in the first half with little between the teams, but a penalty from Ciarán Flynn and a second-half goal from Mark Cody got them over the line, while Cormac Griffen showed up well with 0-3 from play.

Mark O’Connor’s late goal proved to be the difference in Carrigtwohill’s win over Sarsfields at Cobh, with the attacker notching 1-8 overall.

Sars had been ahead by three at the break, and they remained in front on the resumption with Michael Hurley and Odhran McCarthy impressing, but O’Connor hit the net for Carrig to push them in front.

Sarsfields reduced the deficit to one and almost drew at the death, but it wasn’t to be. Mark Reid and Josh McNamara were excellent for the Riverstown side, while Tom Mullins finished four from four with placed balls despite the challenging conditions.

Fr O’Neill’s managed to snatch a draw against Watergrasshill in Carrigtwohill, as Tadhg O’Donoghue-Brosnan nailed the equalising free.

Watergrasshill had led for most of the contest, but O’Neill’s failed to convert two good goal chances that could have proven costly.

Ciaran Lenihan and Jack Counihan were in fine form for the Hill, but they were pegged back late on.
