Three Cork pro boxers hoping for wins this weekend
BUI Irish Light Heavyweight Title: Kevin Cronin and Cathal Crowley
Three Cork professional boxers, Cathal Crowley, Danny Keating and Aaron O’Donoghue will all be back in action this weekend.
Cathal Crowley is fighting in Gibraltar this Friday night when he talks on Spanish fight Fran Verdeguer in a Super Middleweight eight round bout. Crowley took this fight with only three weeks notice as he was to fight on the Jay Byrne card at Leopardstown Racecourse on May 30th, however, he had to withdraw after picking up a nasty eye injury in his last sparring session beforehand.
“I am fighting in the Europa point sports complex Gibraltar. The opponent is a local Spanish fighter Fran Verdeguer,” Cathal said.
“I had to pull out of my last scheduled fight on the 30th of May at the Leopardstown Racecourse due to a cut I picked up in my last spar the week before the fight.
"My camp was after going very well up to that point, however, since that cut I actually kept training while it healed up and that’s which is why I’m in a position to take this fight in Gibraltar on three weeks notice.
“I've also been helping Aaron McKenna get ready for his world title fight on August 8th in the 3Arena.
"With that constant sparring with world class fighters that I’ve been getting the last two years is why I’m confident to take this fight on such short notice.

“After this fight I’ll see what opportunities come my way, but I’ll stay in the gym and be ready to get back out ASAP,” Crowley said.
Danny Keating will defended his WBC Australian Welterweight title when he will take on Australian based Jyl Wright in an eight round bout in the early hours of Saturday morning at the Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane City.
Keating, who has a record of 11-0 was last in action last September when he knocked out Sachin Nautiyal in the first round at the Pat Rafter Arena in Queensland.
However, after that fight he had to undergo surgery to repair tendons in his hand, but he is really to be tested by a tough Wright for him to keep his title.
“I’m fighting the number four guy in Australia Jyl Wright and the fight will take is taken place at Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane City.
“This is my first fight back from my hand surgery which I got done back in early November,” Danny said.
“Training camp gone very well considering being back after the hand operation, I’ve been in training since March for this fight.
“My opponent is a tough come forward fighter with a winning record and a high knockout percentage.
"However, I’m hoping to have a good performance in front of my all my fans , I’m Co main event on live shown on DAZN TV , Stan sports and UFC fight pass platforms.
“My plans is have a little short break to enjoy with my team and family and keep active to finish the year strong,” Keating added.
This will be Aaron O’Donoghue’s third fight of the year when he will face Polish native Marian Wesolowki in a six round bout on another Jay Byrne card at Leopardstown Racecourse on Saturday evening.
O’Donoghue’s last outing was when he won on by unanimous decision to Eligio Palacios in Alicante in Spain to move 5-0.
“I am fighting in Leopardstown Racecourse 10th July against Marian Wesolowki over six rounds,” Aaron said.

“My training camp has been brilliant up in Elite boxing club Cork and I have got great rounds in with the likes of Gary Cully who is world class.
“I am coming int this fight off the back of two good wins so far this year and I am confident this fight being a stoppage finish in rounds four or five.
“I will have a big fight in September but can't announce it, as I have a job to do on Saturday and it will be announced the on Sunday,” O’Donoghue added.
