Winning silverware is always special, but for a group of young Carrigaline United footballers, their recent trip to the Barcelona Girls Cup will be remembered for so much more than the trophies they brought home.
A year in the planning, the adventure to Spain was the reward for a dedicated group of girls who have enjoyed an outstanding season together. The tournament, held in Salou, brought together 84 clubs from across Europe and two teams from the United States, providing an unforgettable experience both on and off the pitch.
The Barcelona Girls Cup is widely regarded as one of Europe's premier youth tournaments for girls, attracting teams from numerous countries to compete in top-class facilities while combining football with a memorable holiday experience.
For manager Alan Hennessy, the trip represented far more than football.
"About a year ago I decided to bring our group of 2015-born Under-11 girls to the Barcelona Girls Cup," he said.
"As a squad they are an exceptional bunch of girls and a really tight-knit group. They're great players and even better teammates, and they really deserved the opportunity."
To ensure every player enjoyed maximum game time, the squad was divided into two teams of nine for the seven-a-side competition.

The Carrigaline Strikers, wearing blue, and the Carrigaline Warriors, in yellow, each competed in separate groups against strong international opposition.
The trip itself was a real club and family effort. Coaches, parents and volunteers worked tirelessly to make the dream possible, with families choosing different ways to experience the occasion.
Some turned it into a week-long family holiday, while others travelled for the tournament weekend, ensuring a large and enthusiastic Carrigaline support throughout.
The travelling party stayed at the Hotel San Diego in Salou, just a short coach journey from the tournament venue.
Each morning, players, coaches and supporters were transported together to the impressive football complex, where eight high-quality pitches hosted matches throughout the weekend.
Carrigaline United's U13 Premier side, coached by Pat Looney and Niamh Lerner, also travelled to Spain, meaning almost 100 players, coaches, parents and supporters proudly represented the Cork club abroad.
"The facilities were top class and the organisation was of a really high standard. The whole experience was brilliant from start to finish."
On the field, the football matched the occasion. With clubs from across Europe displaying exceptional technical ability, every game tested the young Carrigaline players.
Temperatures added another challenge, but both teams embraced the conditions with remarkable determination and spirit.
"Both teams gave absolutely everything. They left everything on the pitch in every game, despite the heat and the quality of the opposition. They did themselves, their families and the club proud."
The Carrigaline Strikers enjoyed a particularly memorable campaign.
After surviving a dramatic semi-final that was decided by a tense 5-4 penalty shootout, they produced a superb performance in the final, winning convincingly 4-0 to lift the Barcelona Girls Cup trophy.
While the football provided unforgettable moments, Hennessy believes the friendships and memories created away from the pitch were equally important.
Whether it was relaxing together around the hotel pool, spending evenings on the beach, or enjoying the inflatable water park along Salou's coastline, the girls strengthened friendships that had already been built through months of training and matches back home.
"As a coach, to see the memories that were created and how the trip galvanised them as a squad, there are no words.
The successful trip came after an impressive campaign in the Cork Women & Schoolgirls Soccer League, where Hennessy has watched every member of the squad develop both as footballers and as young people.
"They work so hard for each other in training and on match days. Week in and week out they always show up for one another. Everything we ask of them, they do with smiles on their faces. We could not be prouder.”
The experience, he believes, will benefit the team long after the medals have been packed away.
"I look forward to hopefully repeating the trip in the future. We'll go into the upcoming season stronger as a squad because of such a memorable experience together."
Hennessy was also keen to acknowledge the enormous support that made the tour possible.
"Myself, Stephen Mangan, Amy McCarthy, Eoin Hickey, Sylvia O'Keefe and Denis Cole would like to thank the players, parents, families and everyone who contributed to making the trip happen.
"It was a real family affair, and it's something that will be remembered forever."
