Division 1 reports

There was to be no great escape for Na Piarsaigh in Division 2 of the RedFM Hurling League and Thursday night’s defeat to Kanturk confirmed their relegation.

The city side went in to the final round of fixtures on five points and had to pick up two more in Duhallow, while also hoping that more than one of the sides on seven points would be beaten.

Though the latter part of that equation materialised as Carrigaline lost at the already-relegated Ballymartle and Ballincollig fell to Newtownshandrum on Sunday, both sides knew they were safe thanks to Kanturk’s 2-23 to 2-14 triumph.

Liam O’Keeffe had an early goal before Na Piarsaigh had registered a score and Colin Walsh also found the net in the first half, though by half-time the deficit was down to just a point, 2-9 to 2-8. Kanturk stayed on top in the second period, however.

Erin’s Own had been assured of a place in the final before the weekend but they geared up for a final meeting with Bride Rovers as they beat Valley Rovers by 3-21 to 1-19. James O'Carroll, Conor Lenihan and Maurice O'Carroll all found the net for the Caherlag side, who had Cathal Lenihan, Finn O'Brien and Peter O'Shea among the points.

Newtownshadrum took third place as a strong second half helped them to beat Ballincollig by 1-20 to 0-12.

The hosts led by 1-9 to 0-7 at half-time thanks to a Turlough O'Neill goal from a sideline that whizzed into the net with the aid of the strong breeze, while Ronan Geary, Rory Troy and Robert Troy were razor sharp.

The visitors, who got some good scores from Adam Wills and Tadhg O'Connell, with Fenton Denny impressive in defence, had the wind at their backs in the second half but Newtown used the ball superbly to quell any prospect of a comeback.

The Division 3 final will be between Ballinhassig and Blarney after they beat Lisgoold and Bandon respectively. Courcey Rovers had been level on points with that pair ahead of the final set of games but they lost to a Castlelyons side whose relegation had been confirmed with a midweek defeat against Inniscarra – the latter’s triumph over Éire Óg on Sunday meant they leapfrogged Courceys to finish third.

In Division 4, Aghabullogue beat Mallow to overtake Watergrasshill, who were beaten by Bishopstown. They will take on Kilworth, who had already earned their spot in the decider, while Blackrock and Ballyhea came off worst in a heavily-contested relegation battle.
