Rockmount set to secure their footballing future with new all-weather pitch at Whitechurch

Last week marked the beginning of a landmark new chapter in the proud history of Rockmount AFC as work officially commenced on the club’s new all-weather facility and spectator area in partnership with JNC Premier Pitches & Fencing.

In its 102-year history, the project represents the largest and most ambitious development ever undertaken by the Whitechurch club.

More than just a new facility, it is a significant investment in the future of Rockmount AFC and a statement of intent as the club continues to grow and evolve for generations to come.

For over a century, Rockmount has been built on the dedication of volunteers, coaches, committee members, players, supporters and families who have given their time and energy to create one of Cork’s most respected football clubs.

The new development is a reflection of that legacy and of a shared commitment to ensuring future generations enjoy even greater opportunities.

Among those helping to drive the project forward is club legend Billy Cronin.

Having enjoyed tremendous success and created countless memories during his years with Rockmount, Cronin has now transitioned from management to committee work as a way of giving something back to the club that has meant so much to him.

“It’s important to contribute when you can,” said Cronin.

"Rockmount has given so many people incredible memories over the years. I’ve been fortunate to experience that first-hand, and now I’m delighted to play a role in helping the club move forward.

"Hopefully, in years to come, other former players and managers will do the same and continue that tradition of giving back.”

Cronin believes the new facility will be transformational for every section of the club.

“This project is not simply about new facilities. It is about honouring our history while investing in the future.

"It is about ensuring that the young boys and girls who wear the Rockmount jersey in the years ahead have the very best opportunities to learn, develop, compete and create memories that will last a lifetime.

“The new all-weather pitch will provide year-round access to football, while the enhanced spectator area will improve the experience for everyone who comes through our gates.

"Together, these developments will strengthen every part of Rockmount AFC, from our youngest academy players right through to our senior teams.”

The project has been several years in the making. Club officials began exploring options to improve facilities as participation numbers continued to rise and the demand for training space increased.

Rather than being driven by one individual, the development has been a collective effort involving committee members, volunteers, supporters and the wider community.

“We’re slow to start naming individuals because whenever you do, there’s always someone you leave out.

"This has truly been a club effort. So many people have contributed countless hours behind the scenes through fundraising, planning and preparation.

"The support from the entire Rockmount community has been incredible.”

The need for an all-weather facility became increasingly apparent in recent years. Weather disruptions have often caused significant challenges, with the club going months without playing a home game at Rockmount Park just two years ago due to adverse conditions.

The new Astro facility will eliminate many of those issues by providing a high-quality playing and training surface that can be used throughout the year, regardless of the weather.

It will increase training capacity, accommodate growing membership numbers and create additional opportunities for player development across all age groups.

The development is being constructed on the club’s existing schoolboys pitch, while Rockmount’s main grass pitch will continue to play a central role in club activities.

Upgrades to spectator fencing are already underway, ensuring that supporters will also benefit from an improved matchday experience.

The facility will also support Rockmount’s ambitions to continue expanding both its boys’ and girls’ sections, creating greater opportunities for participation and development within the local community.

Funding for the project has been supported by a €120,000 Sports Capital Grant, while additional assistance has been received through grants from Cork County Council and Cork City Council.

However, significant costs remain, and the club plans to launch a range of fundraising initiatives and community events to help complete the project and secure its long-term success.

As construction begins, there is a palpable sense of excitement around Rockmount Park. While today is a celebration of progress, it is also a tribute to the generations of people whose dedication built the club into what it is today.

The work has now begun on what promises to be a transformative development.

For Billy Cronin, the committee, and everyone connected with Rockmount AFC, the vision is clear: to leave the club in a stronger position than they found it and provide a lasting legacy for the players, volunteers and supporters who will call Rockmount home for decades to come.
