Cork Schoolboy league Kennedy Cup team hoping to go very far in this week's tournament in UL

The Cork Kennedy Cup squad of 2026.

Cork Schoolboy League's Kennedy Cup campaign is currently underway, having started their games on Monday.

Brendan McCarthy's side are firmly focused on achieving their ultimate goal of lifting one of Irish schoolboy football's most prestigious trophies.

At the midway point of the tournament, Cork have already completed their group fixtures against Tipperary South, Longford and Waterford, however, at the time of writing this they were awaiting to hear who they’re would face today.

Regardless of who stands in their way, manager Brendan McCarthy remains confident that his talented squad has what it takes to challenge for top honours.

The Kennedy Cup has long been regarded as the pinnacle of schoolboy representative football in Ireland, providing a platform for some of the country's brightest young talents to showcase their abilities.

Cork entered this year's competition with high expectations following a strong campaign in 2025, when they reached the semi-finals before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Donegal.

They would eventually finish third overall, a performance that has served as motivation for the current group.

McCarthy believes this year's panel possesses the quality, determination and character required to go even further.

"We have a great squad and I definitely believe we can go all the way," said McCarthy.

"There is a fantastic attitude throughout the group and the players have worked extremely hard to prepare for this tournament.

"They are representing Cork with great pride and are determined to make the most of the opportunity."

One of the strengths of the current Cork setup is the diversity of talent available to the management team.

The squad is made up of players representing 12 different clubs from across the county, highlighting the depth and quality that exists within Cork schoolboy football.

Leading the team on the pitch is College Corinthians' Stephen Barlow, who captains the side and has embraced the responsibility of guiding a talented group through a demanding week of football.

Barlow shares his manager's belief that this Cork squad has the potential to surpass the achievements of last year's team.

The blend of technical ability, work ethic and togetherness within the squad has been evident throughout the build-up to the tournament and during the opening fixtures.

While individual talent is important at Kennedy Cup level, success often depends on how quickly players from different clubs can come together as a cohesive unit. Cork appear to have achieved that balance.

Behind the scenes, McCarthy has assembled an experienced and specialised backroom team which he credits with playing a major role in the squad's preparation.

"I have a great backroom staff in James Forrest, Derek Falvey and Paul Connolly, all of whom have been quality additions to the squad," he said.

"Derek is our dead-ball specialist coach, while Paul focuses on passage of play and patterns.

"James has done a lot of tactical and positioning work with the lads. Their contribution has been huge and the players have benefited enormously from their expertise."

The collaborative approach taken by the management team has ensured that every aspect of the players' development has been addressed, from tactical awareness and positional discipline to set-piece execution and attacking patterns of play.

For McCarthy, personally, this year's tournament marks a significant milestone.

Having been involved in schoolboy football for the past 12 years, the Kennedy Cup represents his first appearance as Cork manager at the competition.

It is a challenge he has embraced with enthusiasm and appreciation.

"Being involved with Cork at the Kennedy Cup is something I really looked forward to. I am grateful to Peter Connolly and Eddie Doyle for giving me the opportunity to manage this group of players."

The experience has already been a rewarding one, but McCarthy is determined to ensure the journey continues for as long as possible.

He expects fierce competition throughout the remainder of the week, with every county aiming to extend their stay in Limerick and challenge for silverware.

However, Cork's objectives were clearly established before the tournament began.

"The aim was always to top the group and then hopefully go all the way.

With confidence high, a talented squad at his disposal and a dedicated management team working tirelessly behind the scenes, Cork remain firmly in contention.

"The challenges will only become tougher as the knockout stages approach, but the belief within the camp is unmistakable.

Can Cork complete a historic double, following the girls success last week capturing the Gaynor cup for the first time in seven years?
