David Buckley gave Cork a real lift with his display in the win against Meath last Saturday week in the All-Ireland SFC Round 1 game at Páirc Uí Rinn, producing a performance that stood out.
Made all the more impressive because his game time during the Allianz Division 2 League had been limited. He looked like a player who had been waiting for a chance and was determined to make the most of it. His 0-3 was important, but the manner of his scores, including the orange flag effort, said even more about where his game is right now.
It was after all his first championship start for the Rebels.
Buckley’s impact was no surprise to those who have watched him closely at club level. He has been a consistent performer for Newcestown in recent years.
What he produced against Meath was very much in line with the standards he sets for his club. Cork needed someone to bring a bit of directness and calm, and he did both. He showed well for the ball, used possession sensibly, and never looked rushed.
Buckley backed up his display with the impact he made as a sub in the Munster final loss to Kerry in Killarney, where he brought energy and purpose on a difficult day and scored a point.

What also stood out was his work rate. For someone who hadn’t seen much league action, he looked sharp and fully tuned in. His movement was good and he played with a sense of purpose.
Buckley didn’t just come in against Kerry and Meath and do a job — he made a clear impact. He gave Cork energy, accuracy and a bit of leadership.
After a period where chances were scarce, he showed he is ready to play a bigger part.
