Naomh Abán make the long journey to CLG Chill Chartha in Donegal as they begin their Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta campaign with a first-round clash against An Ghaeltacht of Kerry, the reigning All-Ireland IFC champions.

The game throws-in on Saturday at 5.30pm.

Naomh Abán remain one of the competition’s most decorated clubs, with eight titles marking them out as one of the Comórtas’ traditional standard-bearers, their most recent crown coming in 2005.

The last time Naomh Abán competed in the senior competition was in 2016, when they hosted it.

For the Ballyvourney outfit, the timing of the competition is ideal. With the McCarthy Insurance Group PIFC beginning at the end of July, this weekend offers a valuable opportunity for the group to come closer.

They are also in a strong position to push for promotion from the McCarthy Insurance Group Division 3 Football League.

There is a renewed sense of purpose around the club this season. The arrival of a star-studded management team from Kerry has injected fresh energy, structure and expectation.

Kerry legends Seamus Moynihan and Pat Flanagan have joined Jimmy Allen’s set-up, while Gary McGrath — with extensive experience at underage and adult level for Kerry and senior football with Beaufort — serves as head coach.

After reaching the semi-final stage of the PIFC in each of the last two seasons, falling to Aghabullogue on both occasions, there is a clear determination within Naomh Abán to finally push beyond that barrier.

This weekend, then, is not solely about the Comórtas itself, but it is a chance to reconnect with that tradition while also looking ahead to what they hope will be a defining championship season.
