Munster Rugby Talking Points: Season saved but key players will be needed from here

Reds made the URC quarter-final but have to take on the high-flying Bulls away

Munster have this weekend off, but thankfully their season is very much still alive, as they are busy preparing for the difficult trip to South Africa on Saturday week to face the in-form Bulls in the URC quarter-final.

Disaster avoided:

A defeat last week to the Lions at Thomond Park would have seen Munster finish outside the URC play-off positions and also miss out on Champions Cup qualification, which would have had major negative financial implications for the club, but thankfully they got the job done on a 24-17 scoreline to ensure next season was not damaged before it had even begun.

The win saw Munster leapfrog rivals Connacht and Ulster to prove that the rumours of their demise might have been premature, if not greatly exaggerated, although the loss to Connacht the week before meant that the best they were going to get out of last weekend was an away quarter-final, and they do not come trickier than a visit to Pretoria to face the Bulls.

Munster are in bonus territory now, and they will have the brilliant memories of three years ago to spur them on, when they won three play-off games on the road against Glasgow, Leinster and the Stormers to lift the URC trophy in Cape Town.

The same will be required if there is to be a repeat this year, with their path to the title possibly being away ties against the Bulls and then Glasgow and Leinster.

It may be a tall order for Clayton McMillan’s side, but no one enjoys facing Munster once the business end of the season comes around.

Bulls barrier:

Thoughts will be fully focused on the task of beating the Bulls at noon on Saturday week. It will be no easy task, but their recent visit to Pretoria in late March should give them the confidence to feel that they can definitely win this tie.

The two sides fought out a 34-31 thriller at Loftus Versfeld Stadium two months ago, with Munster even outscoring their hosts by five tries to four, with the accurate boot of World Cup winner Handre Pollard proving crucial to the outcome.

That fixture displayed that the Bulls possess pace and power throughout their side but it also showed that they can be got at, with Tom Ahern scoring a brace and Sean O’Brien, Ben O’Connor and Edwin Edogbo all helping themselves to a try each in the high-scoring encounter.

Those 34 points were the lowest score that the Bulls have registered on their home turf in 2026, with them notching up huge scores of 49, 41, 40, 54 and 45 in games against Bristol, the Sharks, Cardiff, Zebre and Benetton.

Munster will know that their attack will have to click if they are to have a chance at progressing to the semi-final stage.

If they need encouragement then they just need to look at that Bristol game in January, as the English side won that one by 49-61 in a ridiculously high-scoring game.

Those stats also indicate that defence will be key in this knockout tie. Munster displayed some heroic defending in the win over the Lions, with the likes of Brian Gleeson, Evan O’Connell, Michael Ala’alatoa and Alex Kendellen putting their bodies and souls on the line to keep their tryline intact. That same, and more, will be required in Pretoria.

Key players:

Munster fans feared the worst when Jack Crowley was a late cry-off against the Lions, but JJ Hanrahan filled in and gave arguably his best performance of the season in the ten shirt when deputising for the Irish outhalf.

Tadhg Beirne has not been seen in Munster red since the victory over Ulster, but again Munster were not found lacking in the engine room of the pack last week. In saying that, it is difficult to envisage Munster winning in South Africa without arguably their two most important players.

Munster head coach Clayton McMillan seemed confident that Crowley would make it, as he stated that: “We’ve got a two-week lead-in to the Bulls so I’d be reasonably confident that he’d be alright and there’ll be others that are on the injury list that will be back".

Beirne is in this list of players who could return with McMillan describing his chances as “touch and go” to face the Bulls.

Evan O’Connell was superb in the second row alongside Tom Ahern against the Lions and if anything he has been underutilised in this campaign as he has shown that he is up to the required level any time he has been asked to step up.

There would be no fear of unleashing the likes of O’Connell in this tie, but it would certainly help them to have the likes of Beirne and Crowley battling alongside them.
