Midleton CBS bask in glory of historic rugby double
Midleton CBS celebrate winning the U16 Mungret Shield.
Midleton CBS are basking in the glow of a historic provincial rugby double, after winning the U16 Mungret Shield and the U19 Mungret Cup for the very first time.
In what was a captivating affair in the Mungret Shield decider, Midleton CBS produced the most dramatic of late comebacks at Musgrave Park to edge out Kinsale CS 25–24.
After Kinsale CS made a bright start and edged into an early lead, the East Cork school got back on level terms at 7-7, when David Hanna powered over the line following strong carries from Ryan Spillane and Finn Matson. Sam Morris subsequently added the conversion.
Kinsale CS then restored their advantage, before Midleton finished the opening half in commanding fashion. Ryan Spillane surged through a gap to score for a try, which was also duly converted.
A few moments later, Spillane was to crash over for his second try, giving Midleton CBS a 17–12 advantage at the break.
For large portions of the second half, the contest looked to be going in the direction of Kinsale CS, who held a 24–17 advantage with less than 10 minutes remaining.
But Midleton CBS were not finished yet. As the contest ticked into the final minute, Midleton opted for a crucial shot at goal, with Sam Morris holding his nerve to convert and reduce the gap to 24–20.
During this particular juncture of the contest, Colin Crowley put in several crunching tackles, while Harry McCarthy was efficient at lineout time.
There was still time for a dramatic late twist in the tale, as Finn Matson glided through the Kinsale defence to score the match-winning try.
The win was a deserved reward for a Midleton CBS side that showed resilience, composure and determination throughout the campaign as a whole, qualities that proved crucial in this decider.

In the Mungret Cup U19 final, Midleton CBS came out on top after recording a 37-29 over Hamilton High School Bandon.
With captain Robert Casey leading by example, this was an impressive all-round display from Midleton CBS as they charged on to secure a fully deserved victory.
Midleton CBS got the opening try of the contest as Charles Howard showcased slick speed and agility to race over the line.
All of the conversions and penalty kicks on the day were taken by Eoin Dempsey, who showed strong consistency and red-hot accuracy from placed kicks.
Among the stand-out Midleton CBS players were Alex Broderick, Bradley O'Brien, Sam Douglas, Matt O'Keeffe and Dempsey.
With both of these victories coming on the same day, it is sure to be an occasion which will live with all involved at Midleton CBS for some time to come.
