Douglas Hall shine at Turner's Cross to defeat College Corinthians in Gussie Walsh Cup final
Youth Soccer: Douglas Hall beat College Corinthians in the U17 Gussie Walsh Cup final at the Munster FA Turner's Cross.
Douglas Hall lifted the Daly Industrial Supplies Gussie Walsh U17 Cup at the Munster FA Turner's Cross after an excellent display.
The Hall led 3-0 at half-time courtesy of a brace from John Dollard-Young and one from Elvis Alade.
Corinthians pulled a goal back in the 56th minute through Sam Aluko. However, Alade added another goal late in the game to seal it.
After an exciting opening period, the Hall made the breakthrough in the 18th minute with a sweet half-volley from John Dollard-Young from a Corinthians clearance. They increased their lead six minutes later. Dollard-Young picked up a loose ball outside the box and sent a left-footed effort high into the roof of the net.
Corinthians tried hard to work their way back into the game but Hall keeper Noel Cantwell saved twice in the space of a few minutes from James McCarthy. Two minutes before half-time, Elvis Elade chased a long ball and poked his effort past Alex Daly to give his side a 3-0 lead.
Corinthians began the second half on the front foot and were rewarded after 11 minutes, when Sam Aluko scored with a fine header from close range.
That was as good as it got for Cors as, despite battling hard, Elade struck again at the other end by converting a well-rehearsed free-kick routine in the 88th minute.
The only disappointing part of this derby was that it finished with three players getting red cards in injury time.
Hall coach Donagh Keeshan was very happy with the display but is concentrating on adding more silverware before the season ends.
“We are absolutely delighted to win the Gussie Walsh Cup this evening against our close neighbour Corinthians,” Donagh said.
"It was important that we came out strong from the start following our disappointment at losing to St Kevin's in Dublin last weekend in the FAI Cup semi-final.
"For now, we will savour and celebrate this."
