McCarthy Insurance Group FL wrap: Cathail O'Mahony on fire with 1-8 as Mitchelstown impress

Carrigaline have jumped to the top of the McCarthy Insurance Group Division 2 Football League after winning a crucial game at the weekend.
It was the fourth round of fixtures in the seven divisions, with clubs looking to build momentum at the halfway stage.
In Division 1, Newcestown’s clash with St Finbarr’s and Clonakilty’s meeting with Castlehaven both ended in draws on Saturday. On Sunday, Cill na Martra, Carbery Rangers and Knocknagree all emerged victorious. Reports on those games are attached to the start of this article.
Carrigaline ground out a hard-fought 0-13 to 0-12 away victory over Uibh Laoire, as Michael Meaney’s side replaced the hosts at the summit of Division 2.
Carrigaline now sit on seven points, while Uibh Laoire — who had led the way — remain on six points after their first defeat.
Éanna Desmond was to the fore again for the Carrigdhoun men. Jack McCarthy’s late point ultimately proved the insurance score, despite the home team cutting the deficit to a single point.
Ballincollig are building up a head of steam. The Village have now won three games on the bounce after their opening day blip. The latest one defeating St Michael’s at home by 1-12 to 1-8. Cian Ahern led the way with 1-2, while Cian O’Connor, Jack Murray, and Pete Kelly also shone as Aidan Kelleher continues to add depth to his panel.

Clyda Rovers and Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh shared the spoils in Mourneabbey, finishing 2-6 to 0-12.

It looked like goals from Seán O’Sullivan and Kevin Graham would steer Clyda Rovers to victory, but the Shorten brothers, Ben and Donagh, contributed a combined 0-8 for the visitors.
In Division 3, it’s tight at the top with four teams tied on six points.
Aghabullogue lead the way on scoring difference after their 2-12 to 0-16 win over Newmarket in Coachford.
David Thompson and Matthew Bradley supplied the goals. Newmarket are bottom on zero points.

Brian Cuthbert’s Bishopstown are ticking along nicely after picking up a third win in four outings. Their latest success came on home soil, a 1-15 to 0-14 victory over Fermoy.
Neil Crowley, Kieran McFadden, Simon Collins, Conor Dunne and Mark Scally were among the scorers as the Town moved to six points. Fermoy remain in a decent position with three points, having played only three games.
Mallow are the third team on six points after proving too strong for visitors Rockchapel, winning 0-11 to 1-3. Eoin Kelleher hit 0-3 for the winners.
Rockchapel sit just above the drop zone on two points.
Kanturk are the final side with three wins from four. They edged a high-scoring encounter with Bandon in Kanturk, 1-18 to 3-10. Colin Walsh led the way with 0-5 including a two-pointer, Liam O’Keeffe struck the goal. Kanturk have six points, while Bandon are on three points after three games.
Naomh Abán remain firmly in the promotion hunt. They now have five points after a 1-22 to 1-18 victory over Kilshannig in Ballyvourney. Ed Myers, Wayne McCarthy and Aodán Lucey did the bulk of the scoring for the Muskerry outfit.
Kilshannig sit in the drop zone on two points.
In Division 5, Cork footballer Cathail O’Mahony scored 1-8 as Mitchelstown won away at Canovee, 2-12 to 1-10.
In the same division, St Nick’s showed real character to kick the last four scores — including a two-pointer from Jack O’Sullivan — to earn a 0-16 to 2-10 draw at home to Bantry Blues.

The Blackpool side had impressive performers from the likes of Lee Quilligan, Kieran Kelleher and Ben Heffernan, with Heffernan kicking the leveller.
Gearóid Mulcahy also stood out, landing two points.
