Kanturk began life in Division 2 of the RedFM Hurling League in good form on Sunday as they recorded an impressive win at home to Carrigaline.
With the fixture list bringing together the two clubs relegated from the top flight at the end of last year’s campaign, there was an opportunity to get off on the right foot and Kanturk took that, winning on a scoreline of 3-22 to 1-11.
The Duhallow side started well, getting 1-4 on the board before their visitors got off the mark, and by half-time the outcome was all but decided as they held a 2-17 to 0-5 advantage.
Daniel O’Connell and Colin Walsh scored the gaols for the winners while Cork senior panellist Brian O’Sullivan finished with nine points, four from play. Brian Kelleher, David Drake and Callum O’Farrell led the way on the scoring front for Carrigaline, whose goal was scored by Kevin O’Reilly.
The two teams entering the second tier from below both enjoyed winning starts.
Bride Rovers had Adam Walsh to the fore on the scoring front as they beat Valley Rovers by 1-17 to 1-16. His goal just before half-time opened up a four-point lead while he was deadly accurate from frees in the second half. Paddy O’Flynn and Shane O’Connor also weighed in.

Newcestown, the team beaten by Bride Rovers in last year’s Division 3 final, enjoyed a 0-19 to 0-15 victory away to Na Piarsaigh.
Ten of the victors’ points came from Richard O’Sullivan, with Seán O’Donovan and Ciarán O’Donovan both scoring two each. For Na Piarsaigh, Pádraig Guest was the scorer-in-chief, finished with ten points.
Also starting with a win were Ballincollig, who won by 2-23 to 0-12 away to Ballymartle. The goals came from Stephen Wills and Cian O’Driscoll, with each adding four points while county player Brian Keating had six points.
James Dwyer and Brian Dore were strong in defence for the mid-Cork side while Leo Hennessy, Shane Cummins and Ryan Deasy accounted for much of the Ballymartle scoring output.
The other scheduled fixture in Division 2, between Erin’s Own and Newtownshandrum, was a postponed as a mark of respect to Newtown’s Pat Herlihy.
