Rising star Nicola Tuthill was picked as the Cork City Sports Athlete of the Year, following on from her selection as the Echo Sportswoman of the Year.

The hammer thrower from Kilbrittian's latest prestigious accolade recognises an exceptional season of national dominance and international breakthrough performances. She firmly established herself among Europe’s leading hammer throwers in 2025 and brought immense pride to Cork athletics.

At the European Throwing Cup last March, she secured gold in the U23 hammer competition, one of the most significant achievements by a Cork athlete in recent years.

From there, Tuthill demonstrated consistency at elite international level, technical excellence and competitive composure. Her continued progression beyond the 70m barrier and leadership make her a role model for young athletes across the city and county with ambitions to challenge the best.

To top it off, her victory last summer at the Cork City Sports International Meet thrilled the home crowd with a 70m+ throw, which also underlined her world-class credentials.

There was no shortage of options for the judges when picking the overall winner of the award from an exceptional group of monthly award recipients in 2025. They represented a host of clubs across Cork, spanning track, field and cross country. However, the 22-year-old's achievements stood out for their international impact and historic significance.

"Nicola’s journey reflects the strength of club athletics in Cork and the pathway from local competition to European podiums," said Donal Murnane, the Cork City Sports director of communications.

"Her work ethic, humility and commitment to continuous improvement embody the values that Cork City Sports seeks to celebrate through its Athlete of the Month and Athlete of the Year awards.

"She is a credit to Bandon AC and UCD AC, her coaches and support team, her family and the wider athletics community."

"On behalf of Cork City Sports, we extend our warmest congratulations to Nicola," he added.

Her achievements this season have elevated Cork athletics on the international stage, inspired the next generation, and reinforced the strength of our athletics community.

"We look forward to following the next chapter of what promises to be an outstanding career."

He also thanked the sponsors and partners who have sustained the awards.

"We sincerely thank The River Lee Hotel, Cork’s 96FM & C103, The Echo/EchoLive.ie and all our long-standing commercial partners and supporters.

"Their investment in Cork athletics enables us to recognise excellence, promote local role models, and celebrate achievement at the highest level."
