Cork U16 camogie side take on Kilkenny in All-Ireland series

Cork's Cliona Harte shoots under pressure from Limerick's Sophie O'Riordan during their Minor Camogie All-Ireland championship clash at Castle Road.

Having lost out to holders Galway in the opening round of the Eir All-Ireland U16A championship, Cork make the journey to Kilkenny on Sunday (venue TBC) in search of victory against a home side that had a good start to their campaign when they defeated Limerick.

In a game where torrential rain should possibly have seen proceedings halted, such were the conditions, Cork had to give way to Galway in a tough hard-fought game.

Galway made all the early running, but Cork, and all credit to Cork, they battled hard to the finish before losing out 2-9 to 1-5.

On a day when it weather conditions made it extremely hard on both sides, Eabha Lynch, Ailbhe Byerley, Lauren McAuliffe and Isobel O’Callaghan all performed well for Cork.

Kilkenny will provide a huge test and on home turf are always formidable opponent.

Against Limerick, they found themselves trailing by three points early in the game, but they settled well and led by a goal at the interval.

The goal was crucial as it kept them in front despite huge Limerick pressure.

Up front, they had excellent performers in Meabh Kenny Noa Bambrick, Rachael Duff, Kate Dalton, Dearbhla Ryan and Ruby Norris, who were all on the score sheet.

Their defence was well marshalled by Rachel Murphy and Katie Mulcahy, and they will lead the way as Kilkenny look to make it back to back victories.

This is a game Cork need to win.

Galway, Kilkenny and Tipperary all have a win to their credit already and were Cork to lose this one, they could face a battle to get a semi-final spot.

Waterford lost out in round one to Tipperary, and they face a tough game this weekend when they take on Galway.

Limerick were at the receiving end of a six point loss to Kilkenny, and they take on a strong Tipperary side on Sunday.

On opening round form, one would expect a win for Tipperary and Galway and should Cork get a result it would put them level with Kilkenny in third place, but results someone have a way of not going as predicted, and no doubt, having lost out in their opening game Limerick will be determined to get results to keep them in the hunt.

MINOR ALL-IRELAND CHAMPIONSHIP:

A great result for the Cork minor camogie side last weekend as they overcame the challenge of a strong Limerick side in Castle Road to maintain their challenge for a place in the last four of the Electric Ireland Minor A championship.

Having lost their opening game to Tipperary by two points the pressure was on to get a positive result, and a goal in either half from Lea Meillouin helped Cork record an important victory.

Galway have two wins to their credit, having defeated Dublin and Limerick.

Kilkenny recorded huge result last weekend as they brushed aside the challenge of Tipperary and with a win already over Dublin, they are joint top with Galway, whilst Tipperary and Cork, with one win each, are in joint second place.

Round three on March 1st will see Limerick take on Kilkenny in a game they will need to win if they have any hope of making it through, whilst Cork will meet Galway and Kilkenny take on Dublin.
