All three Cork teams have home advantage in the Domino’s Super League this weekend.
The Gurranabraher Credit Union Brunell and Waterford Wildcats clash looks mouth-watering at the GCU Arena on Saturday, 7.30pm.
Last weekend, Brunell lost in overtime to National Cup champions Killester. In normal time, Brunell seemed to be heading for victory when Edel Thornton drained a basket with seven seconds remaining to put them one ahead. But Michelle Clark was fouled and scored one of her two free throws to take the game to overtime.
In overtime, Brunell were outscored 10-6.
With the exception of Edel Thornton (18) and Francesca Kyamagero (15), the Irish players failed to get the necessary baskets to trouble Killester.
This weekend, Brunell will have to be ready for a physical battle and will need to restrict Irish senior international sisters Kate (33) and Sarah Hayes (11), who contributed 44 points in their win last weekend over Trinity Meteors.
TUNED IN
Wildcats Americans have failed to fire all season, but they are a team that play to the wire. Brunell will need to be at it from tip-off to secure the all-important win.
Career Decisions UCC Glanmire are certainly on a roll and they produced another solid performance when disposing of Liffey Celtics, 88-68, at the Leixlip Amenities Centre.
Coach Mark Scannell will be pleased with the form of his American duo of Viane Cumber (32) and Jewel Watkins (29), who were simply awesome against Liffey Celtics.
Credit also must go to Claire O’Sullivan, who has been outstanding in this campaign and is regularly in double figures.
Players like Annaliese Murphy and Mia Furlong need to be scoring more. They are both getting decent minutes with little return on the scoring front.
Miriam Loughrey is a warrior on the boards and captain Aine McKenna is capable of much more if her team are to be competing for the coveted title.
Midland’s Park Portlaoise Panthers are going through a tough period, losing last weekend at home to Cavan Eagles.
Jessica Fressle and Alyssa Velles are decent players, but the Portlaoise side lack depth among their Irish players and it would be a major shock if Glanmire failed to win this game at a canter.
Catalyst Fr Mathew’s are still seeking their first win of the season and they could be waiting a little longer, as cup champions Killester are in town tomorrow.
It has been a tough season for the Model Farm Rd team and their coach, Jamie Barry, has put in a lot of work with his squad, but to no avail.
Just like many teams in the Super League, the lack of experienced players is a huge problem, with Grainne Dwyer their leading Irish scorer.
It would be the shock of the season if Killester didn’t depart Cork with maximum points.
