Tom Higgins the Mayfield Supervalu owner continues to show support for all clubs in his area

Local businessman Tom Higgins, a great supporter of clubs and associations in the Mayfield community.

In this city and county local businesses are crucial to the survival of their respective and for Tom Higgins the local Supervalu owner in Mayfield giving to help youth is what his attitude to life is.

Higgins took over his business in August 2023 and is very popular within the community.

Having been born in Mayfield helped greatly and with his wife and three children they have met the challenge head on.

“You cannot expect people to come in your door and give them nothing in return as it was my intention to give back to the community as much as I can because growing up in the area I do know how clubs are dependent on small businesses to help them,” said Tom.

The bottom line for Tom is doing what is within his budget.

“I cannot help everybody that knocks on my door, but I do what I can do and I think in fairness the majority of people within the community understand that,” added Higgins.

When you come into an area with one GAA club on your doorstep it is usually plain sailing but with Mayfield and Brian Dillons so close it was a case helping both.

“I actually played hurling and football with Mayfield and had many a great battle against Brian Dillons, but they were great days and on top of this I played soccer with Mayfield United so not much escaped me in my youth.”

Indeed the contribution to the underage of Mayfield GAA club is very much appreciated by their committee person Michael Sheehan.

“We are very grateful to Tom’s contribution as it helps keep the show on the road and we need businesses like him on an annual basis to keep us afloat.

“I know that he played with the club in his youth, but he is always welcoming when we visit him and I am confident our members repay his generosity by supporting him,” said Michael.

Great rivals Brian Dillons are another club under the Higgins banner and juvenile committee officer Derek Connolly spoke highly of the sponsorship the underage section get from many quarters.

“Just like the majority of clubs in this city and county the underage section is crucial to their survival and many thanks to Tom for his contribution of gear that brings joy to many youngsters,” said Derek.

Mayfield United are another organisation that cater for many in the community and club chairman Tadgh O’Neill paid tribute to Tom in the manner he conducts his business.

“Look there are so many clubs in the area and Tom tries to give a little to us all and that’s all you can expect as in truth he is not a multi-national.

“At Mayfield United it takes some finance to keep the show on the road and the various contributions made by all businesses is very much appreciated,” said O’Neill.

Mayfield Boxing club are the final club that is supported by Tom and just like the GAA and soccer clubs they are renowned for their hard work.

Higgins added: “I have to look at the big picture and Brian Cronin and his coaches do incredible work for the community and without having state of the art facilities the local community centre give them the use of their hall.

“When you look at the number of national titles that this group of people have brought to Mayfield their work is truly outstanding.”

Coach Cronin believes keeping the show on the road gets harder annually.

“We would be lost without the generosity of people like Tom Higgins as we have many coaches giving their free time to keep children active in Mayfield.

“The end result for us over the last decade had been truly magnificent and hopefully it will get easier in the coming years,” said Brian.

Looking at the various volunteers Higgins believes they should be commended in all sports.

“The volunteers are the unsung heroes who give hours of free time because in a nutshell without their contributions we would have serious social issues.”

On the GAA front Tom believes that both Mayfield and Brian Dillons will have to dig deep in the coming years to keep their ships afloat.

“My sponsorship goes to the juvenile sections as this is where it all begins and hopefully the wheel will turn for both clubs with attracting children from the area to play with them.”

For Tom Higgins maintaining community relationships is crucial to his business and he hopes all clubs will be successful and continue with their incredible work that is appreciated by many in the Mayfield community.
