In what was a sensational ending to a lively local-derby at Popham’s Road, Blackpool Celtic claimed the bragging rights after a 3-2 victory over Cathedral Celtic in League 2.

After a busy start, Eoin O’Connell fired wide with a decent effort before forcing William Matthews to stretch and push his strike out for a corner, minutes later.

Then, a lofted clearance by Robbie Leahy was headed into Matthews’ hand by Kyle O’Callaghan.

At the other end, Kyle O’Keeffe was unlucky to see his crisply struck free kick whistle narrowly past the upright as Aaron Morey could only look on.

But, after Jamie Lynch’s cross was just too high for Luke O’Mahony, Blackpool nosed in front when a dinking effort from Eugene Carroll nestled in the net on 17 minutes.

A response from Cathedral then saw Denis McCarthy head wide inside the box from Eoin O’Connell’s chipped cross.

It was all square again though when from a free kick, Christopher Bell found himself unmarked, when he headed home with ease from inside the box to make it honours even on the 27th minute.

Cathedral had a great chance to go further in front, but when Dale Donoghue setup Eoin O’Connell, he drilled agonisingly wide.

Eoin O’Connell redeemed himself somewhat, minutes later when he found Kyle O’Callaghan with a delightful ball into space to fire low and hard into the far corner – 2-1 to Cathedral on 29.

O’Callaghan threatened again soon after – this time, he collected from Jonathan O’Sullivan before cracking a solid effort, inches over.

Eugene Carroll got the second period off with a skewed header that went across goal from Kyle O’Keeffe’s corner.

O’Keeffe threatened again later – after Michael Buckley’s hoisted delivery was cleared, he blazed over with a stinging effort.

Dale Donoguhe then made in-roads behind the Blackpool defence, but a solid block by Billy Murphy saved the day.

A good chance fell for Cathedral Celtic when Dale Donoghue’s delivery from a corner reached the unmarked Jonathan O’Sullivan, but he headed wide while unattended.

Cathedral were having the upper hand now and after Kyle O’Callaghan came so close with an effort, Billy Murphy produced a top-drawer tackle to deny Christopher Bell a pathway through on goal.

Bell had another half chance soon after, but from Jonathan O’Sullivan’s delivery, he headed off course.

What an effort then we save from Morgan O’Connor Green when his screaming effort flashed agonisingly past the upright from a free kick.

Then, came the final sensational ten minutes.

All the signs were there for anyone to see that Cathedral were surely going to hold what they had with a 2-1 lead, but when Blackpool’s Graham Corkery came off the bench, he cracked an unstoppable strike from 25 yards, beyond a despaired Aaron Murphy to make it 2-2 on 83 minutes.
