Ilen Rovers staged a ferocious comeback to overcome Clann na nGael and win the 2025 Clóna Milk Carbery U21 C football championship final in Skibbereen on Sunday.
Down by seven points, Ilen came back from the dead to add a West Cork U21C title to their 2016 and 2018 U21 A triumphs.
This victory was a boost for a club whose adult team has suffered numerous relegations in recent years. Man of the match Sean Connolly shone and scored the winning goal for an Ilen side that held Clann na nGael scoreless in the closing quarter whilst accruing 2-2.
This West Cork 13-a-side decider began with Ilen enjoying the benefit of a strong wind.
Level twice inside the opening six minutes, Sean Connolly and Cathal Daly scored for Ilen, as did Tom McQueen and Paddy McCarthy for the Scorchers.
Despite playing into the teeth of a strengthening wind, Clann na nGael dominated proceedings for the next 10 minutes and moved 1-4 to 0-2 ahead.
Ryan O’Donovan handed the Scorchers their second lead prior to a swift end-line move finding James Russell who billowed the net. Callum Hurley added a 45’.
Guilty of kicking five wind-assisted wides in the opening half, Kyle O’Sullivan’s point was a welcome one for Ilen after 17 minutes. Clann’s response was instant as Damien Fernandes and Caelan O’Driscoll scored to make it 1-6 to 0-3.
Rovers rallied and reduced the deficit to a goal thanks to Aidan Fahy (free) and Paddy Collins’ two-pointer just before the break.
Sean Connolly and William O’Donovan swapped frees on the resumption. Then, Clann moved 2-8 to 0-7 ahead when Paddy McCarthy netted and O’Donovan added a free with 15 minutes remaining.
Clann na nGael would not score again however as Ilen took over. Kevin O’Driscoll arrowed home a superb goal prior to Aidan Fahy (free) and Sean Connolly making it 2-8 to 1-9.
It was left to Sean Connolly to fire home the winning goal with three minutes left and spark wild celebrations at the final whistle.
