Carrigtwohill: U16 CWSSL premier division champions.

“The most important and best thing a coach can ever give a child costs nothing, it’s called belief.”

These are the words of Carrigtwohill girls coach Colum McCarthy, who has brought his side on a fantastic journey since they entered the Cork women’s and schoolgirls league back in 2021.

Since then, they have won the league each year, climbing divisions and their latest success being the premier U16 title.

A first premier title in the club's history.

He has done so, along with the ever-present Sonya Sheehan and here he tells us about their journey and what their success story means to the community.

“Winning the U16 premier division was our goal at the start of the season because we wanted to be the first team ever from Carrigtwohill ever to win a Premier Division title and we did,” said McCarthy.

"We did it in style too. It was really Roy of the Rovers stuff for a team formed in August 2021 to reach the pinnacle of Cork Soccer in a short four year period when you consider we were up against such big clubs that have dominated Cork soccer for years.

"While a lot of it has to do with demographics of the village we should not underestimate the dedication, commitment and bravery of the girls to reach the top.”

While at a committee meeting back in 2021 it was brought to the attention of the members that there was an interest for girls to start at the club. With no rush of hands from anybody else in the room it was left to McCarthy to come forward from which he said at the time he would do the first few sessions until they found a manager.

Four years on and he’s enjoyed the best period of his time in football.

“I thank Reamonn Walsh for giving me the eyes back in that meeting to entice me to put my hand up. Being honest I’m glad I did.

"I’ve had a great four years with the girls. I’ve also had massive help along the way that lead to us lifting this years Premier title.

"I was joined by Clodagh, Lisa, Maria and Sonya. Sonya (Sheehan) has been there since day one really looks out for the girls.

"She has truly earned her place in heaven.

"Brendan Cronin is a fantastic head coach, all sessions are expertly planned and there is phenomenal effort and time put into match prep and sessions.

"Reamonn came back this year to help out when needed and focussed on game smarts and set pieces.

“The league itself was hugely competitive. We played 12 games in total, finishing with 32 points from a possible 36 and only conceding six goals along the way.

“We have been together for four years since inception in August 2021.

"All bar three of our current squad are from the village.

"They go to school together and most importantly they are there for each other when they need each other.

"It’s great to see the friendships grow.

“If we as coaches get the girls out the other side of their teenage years as better teammates and young adults we’ve done a bloody good job and if they’re better footballers at the end of it then that’s a big bonus.

“With the club now having a women’s senior team there is a clear pathway to continue playing and enjoying soccer with Carrigtwohill United.

"I fully expect that in two or three years’ time that the current U16 squad will be playing at senior level for the club.

"That will be some achievement and they will be looking to oust some players from the starting eleven."

Carrigtwohill United are a club that’s expanding rapidly and are currently fundraising to install an AstroTurf pitch.

It’s the first phase of a multi-phase development that seeks to transform not only Ballyadam but sport in Carrigtwohill as a whole.

“For me, the most important thing and the best thing a coach can ever give a child costs nothing. It’s “belief”, and once girls know you believe in them and you back them no matter what, anything is possible.

"Many will knock you but a teammate will pick you up. Life is all about having a teammate whether it’s your parents, best friend, brother, sister, boyfriend, husband, wife etc.

"Having that person to rely on and confide in is priceless. Fortunately, soccer provides you with team mates and friends for life.”
