Richard Daly: St Mary's isn't just a club, it's a family
Richard Daly on the line at St Mary’s Park.
He has spent almost half of his life to date involved with his beloved St Mary’s FC and the Trojan work he has done has helped make the club what it is today.
Last week Richard Daly stepped down as chairman after an incredible 11 years, however, there’s no stopping the 49-year-old Grenagh man as he moves to a new role within the club as chairman of the development committee.
Having spoken to the father of six, his passion, love and commitment to the club is very evident, and he is excited about where the club is at the moment, but also excited about its future, such is the hard work been done by so many on and off the pitch.
Here he tells us about the club that plays a huge part in his family life and how grateful he is for the massive volunteers who help keep it going.
“The club has always been part of our household, from training sessions to match days to fundraisers,” said Daly.
It’s been a shared passion and a big part of our lives and with very little or no talk if we lost a match which didn't happen that often," laughs Daly.
“I’ve been involved with the club for over 20 years, starting as a coach in the academy.
"I went on to coach schoolboys, youths, and juniors before taking on administrative roles.

"I served as vice chairman for almost four years before becoming chairman.
"I’m still involved in running teams and proud to say the club has been a massive part of my life – not just for me, but for my whole family.
“After over 11 years in the role as chairman and more than two decades involved in the club, I felt the timing was right for fresh leadership and new perspectives, so I decided to step down as chairman.
"It was not a decision I took lightly, but I believe change is healthy for any organisation.
"My aim now is to reignite development plans at Mary’s Park and push forward with key infrastructure projects that will benefit all members.
"Ken Daly has taken over the role of chairman, and I’d like to wish him all the best.
"Ken has been deeply involved in the club his whole life and brings energy and a clear vision. I’m confident he’ll continue to build on the work we’ve done and take the club forward with strength and integrity.”
What challenges did Daly face during his time as chairman?
“Like any volunteer-run organisation, funding and resources were consistent challenges.
"Managing increasing demands on facilities, especially during peak playing times, was another. We also faced challenges during COVID, when maintaining engagement and motivation among players and coaches was extremely difficult.
"But we worked hard to support each other, and that resilience became a key strength of the club.
“We certainly faced tough periods, from facility limitations to financial strain but as I stated, the challenges brought by the pandemic were definitely challenging.
"However, through open communication, community support, and a strong committee, we always found a way through. I believe in surrounding myself with good people and working collaboratively – that’s what got us through the hardest times.
"Watching the growth of the academy and the enthusiasm of the young players every weekend made all the work worthwhile.
"Also, seeing former players return to coach or support the club in various ways has been personally rewarding.
“St Mary's isn't just a club, it's a family. And the one thing I always tried to maintain was to make everyone as comfortable and as welcome as possible in Mary's Park.

"I want to sincerely thank all the players, parents, coaches, volunteers, committee members, and supporters who make this club what it is.
"It’s been an honour to serve as chairman, and I look forward to continuing to contribute in my new role.
"The future is bright for St Mary’s – and I’m proud to still be part of it.”
