Robbie Walsh claimed a big prize last week when he won the Douglas Senior Scratch Cup.

The Golf Strong sponsored event was held over 36 holes, and Douglas was in great condition. Walsh led after an impressive one under par 69 in the opening round, he was the only player to break par in the morning.

He followed that with another 69 in the afternoon which saw him stand on a winning score of -2. As it happened, he was the only golfer to shoot below par in the afternoon as well giving him an impressive winning margin of seven shot over the chasing field.

“It was great to get another win,” said Walsh.

“I hadn’t won since Lee Valley two years ago, I’ve have been playing well so far this year so it was great to get over the line and win another one of the big scratch cups in Cork especially in Douglas where I have been a member for the past few years.”

Walsh was happy with the way he played, and it was just a case of keeping the momentum going in the second round.

“I played very solid golf in the first round and should have probably been a couple of shots better so I knew I was playing well and that if I could keep that going in the second round I’d be hard to beat.

I just tried to focus on my own game rather than worry about what anyone else was doing.

"It was nice to finish strong in the second round playing my last 9 in 2 under. I didn’t really know how many shots I was ahead so just tried to keep going and shoot the best score I could."

Walsh has been playing well for all of 2025, but at the elite amateur level, getting a win is never easy.

His play and his results mean that he can get into the top events in Ireland but he hadn’t managed to grab a win in 2024 or the first part of 2025.

“To be honest, I’ve just been trying to play good golf and let the results take care of themselves.

"I didn’t play my best for some parts of last year but I put a lot of work in over the Winter and feel like I have improved a lot.

So it was just about staying patient and trying to let the results take care of themselves.

"In golf, it’s definitely better to focus on yourself and not look at how anybody else is doing.”

Walsh, who is often joined his brother James at the leading amateur events has just finished his second year in UCC and has his summer schedule mapped out.

“I plan to play the full schedule in Ireland for the rest of the season as well as a few tournaments abroad.

"I’m playing in the East next week and then the Connacht Strokeplay the week after and then heading over to St. Andrews to play in the Boyd Quaich a couple of weeks after that which should be very enjoyable.”

Robbie along with James and five other golfers head for Louth this week for the 72-hole East of Ireland Championship which gets underway tomorrow.

Meanwhile, a dozen Cork golfers were in action in Naas last week for the Irish Seniors.

Karl Bornemann and John O’Brien led the charge on the opening day. Bornemann shot a three under par 68 to lie in second place, that was thanks in part to an impressive haul of five birdies.

John O’Brien was just one shot behind on -2. He was also on the birdie train, recording eight birdies in his round.

Neither golfer could match that score on the second day but there was a low score out there.

Jason Law shot a hugely impressive four under par 67, after a quiet front nine he went on to record two eagles in the back nine on his way to shooting the low score of the day.

That saw him jump into the top ten going into the final round. Bornemann and Law would finish in the top ten, and Kinsale’s Shane Kenneally was 13th thanks to a final round 70 that saw him jump 17 places on the leaderboard.
