Nemo Rangers joined Clonakilty at the top of the McCarthy Insurance Group Division 1 league table following their narrow win over the West Cork side at Trabeg on Wednesday night.

The game was close all through, with Nemo hitting four two-pointers over the hour, some of them vital to keep the home side in contention.

This was a highly entertaining game with some superb displays on both sides, with Tom Clancy and Conor Daly to the fore for Clon, and Barry Cripps and Ross Corkery impressing for the home side.

Clon took the lead in the fourth minute when Daly pointed, with Bryan Hayes replying at the other end. Corkery put the home side in front before Clon hit four without reply to go 0-5 to 0-2 up after 11 minutes.

Sean McEvoy got the first with Dara Ó Sé getting their third, with Daly adding two more as they were enjoying the better of the opening exchanges.

They were unlucky not to go further ahead when Clancy caught a great ball and burst forward. He played Daly in but Cillian Martin saved brilliantly to deny him a goal.

Hayes then put only one between the sides with a two-pointer, before two in a row from Ó Sé made it 0-7 to 0-4 in Clon’s favour.

Corkery made it a two-point game and when Ronan Dalton got Nemo’s second score from beyond the arc they were back on level terms, 0-7 each.

Clon had another goal chance, this time Clancy’s effort coming back off the bar, but the ref was playing advantage and Daly pointed the free

Nemo then had their first real goal chance, but Corkery’s effort went just wide after 26 minutes. Late points from Daly and Dara Gough increased Clon’s lead as the West Cork side led by 0-10 to 0-7 at half-time.

An early orange flag effort in the second half from Corkery, followed by a free from Conor Horgan had the sides level, but with 40 minutes gone, Clon retook the lead.

Daly found the back of the net, to make it 1-12 to 0-12, and when Ó Sé added a point it looked like they were going to win. But Nemo hit back, with another two-pointer from Corkery, before Hayes got their goal, which put them in front by a point.

Colm Kiely stretched that to two, before Ó Sé and Luke Griffin had the sides level, 1-15 each.

A late point from Kiely put Nemo in front as Clon had a goal disallowed in injury time as it was deemed a square ball, to see the home side run out winners after a highly entertaining game.
