Gerard Nash is the new Cork City manager

Cork City have officially confirmed the appointment of Gerard Nash as men’s first team manager, with Liam Kearny acting as his assistant on an interim basis for the foreseeable future.

The 38-year-old moves to Turner’s Cross after working with GAIS in Sweden and as Aston Villa’s U18s Head Coach.

Nash will not be in charge for Friday’s visit to St Patrick’s Athletic at Richmond Park, Greg Yelverton and Liam Kearney will take charge of the Rebel Army in Dublin.

The coach is keeping the same structures in place from what worked under Tim Clancy with Anthony Fennelly, Damien Coleman, and Paul O’Donovan remaining as goalkeeping coach, strength and conditioning coach, and Head of Analysis.

Nash will take over a Cork City team that is second from bottom in the Premier Division, and has recorded just two league wins all season.

The Rebel Army are currently eight points off automatic safety, and they are battling Sligo Rovers in a bid to avoid automatic relegation.

The Leixlip native will try and keep the club in the Premier Division, something not done since 2019.

That season started with John Caulfield in charge of City and since then there’s been four different managers in charge of the club, Nash included.

Speaking to the club’s media team, the coach said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be appointed as the new Men’s First Team Manager at Cork City FC. 

"Everyone in Ireland knows the history that the club has, its fantastic support base, and the potential within the existing players. I have watched a lot of the league this season from afar, and I have no doubt that there is so much more we can deliver.

“Everyone in the league knows that Cork City are one of the biggest clubs in the country and Turner’s Cross is a great place to watch a game of football. 

"I know we have quality in the dressing room, and I cannot wait to get started,” he added.

Cork City owner Dermot Usher said; “I am very pleased to welcome Ger to the club. He has a long and very impressive track record as a coach, and he really impressed us with his thoughts on taking on the role. 

"From speaking to him, I know how motivated he is to take on the job, and I know he will give it everything he has. Everyone at the club wants to see us improve and begin to climb the table, and I share Ger’s belief that we have the talent in our dressing room to improve.” 

The club are now actively looking for an assistant coach that will work with Nash, a search that has been ongoing since Jamie Hamill left Turner’s Cross last March.
