Glen Rovers were comfortable victors away to Kanturk on Saturday in the RedFM Division 1 Hurling League.
Neither side operated anywhere near full strength and though the pair entered the contest in the relegation zone, there was much to admire about the hurling. When it mattered, the Glen's link play was fluent to secure enough scores to pull away from the gritty hosts.
The better balance of their attack carried the day with Dean Brosnan in superb form at centre-forward, shooting an impressive 0-7 from play.
Elsewhere for the northsiders, Zach Lynch, Eoin Varian, Liam Coughlan and Donagh Coughlan were effective in defence with Jake Brosnan and Dave Noonan combining excellently at midfield. Sharpshooter Brosnan was well supported by Rhys Dunne and Evan Murphy.
Early on, the Glen had started in determined fashion with points from Eoin O’Leary, Murphy and Brosnan. Kanturk keeper Grantas Bucinskas had to produce an excellent save to deny full-forward O’Leary.
This lifted Kanturk’s game, growing into the contest through the encouraging play of Lorcán McLoughlin, Conor Sheahan, Colin Walsh and Lorcan O’Neill. They landed four of the next five points through Brian O’Sullivan, O’Neill and Rory Sheahan.
Kanturk jumped ahead briefly when Alan Walsh intercepted a puck-out: 0-7 to 0-6. The Glen reacted positively, Donagh Coughlan pointed on the double before a delivery from Noonan found Evan Murphy to hit a rasper to the Kanturk net in the 20th minute.
Kanturk’s best chance of an immediate reply saw the Walsh brothers combine only for Alan to flash the sliotar across the face of the Glen goal. Coming up to the break, the Glen summoned up a productive burst, points from O’Leary, Coughlan, Brosnan and Rhys Dunne helped build a 1-12 to 0-9 advantage.
On the restart, the Glen maintained the upper hand, pushing nine clear. In fairness, Kanturk offered a spirited response as the high fielding of both Colin and Alan Walsh troubled the Glen rearguard.

Five points without reply from Sheahan, O’Sullivan and Alan Walsh reduced the deficit, 1-16 to 0-15. Kanturk might well have been closer but Sheahan's goal effort from a close-in free was thwarted by Cathal Hickey.
During Kanturk’s revival, the Glen went through a sloppy patch, with five wides recorded in quick succession. However, that only proved a temporary lapse, regaining control with Brosnan, O’Leary and Brian Moylan splitting the uprights.
The Glen defence came to terms at ground level with the aerial possession won by the Walsh brothers, though Sheahan converted a pair of frees. The Glen saw out the closing minutes, the outcome put to bed by Brosnan and O’Leary scores.
Next up for Glen Rovers is a home game against Carrigaline with Kanturk away to Sarsfields.
