There are two teams that remain with a 100% record in the McCarthy Insurance Group Football League Division 1.

Those two teams are Clonakilty and St Finbarr’s.

Clonakilty, the joint top goal scorers have eight goals majors across the opening four games, while St Finbarr’s – despite only picking up two green flags are four from four thanks to 13 orange flags being raised over four games.

Nine of those thirteen orange flags were kicked by Sherlock, despite the forward only playing two of St Finbarr’s four games. To the surprise of absolutely no one – he leads the way in the Division 1 FL scoring charts as we near the halfway mark of the league season.

His closest challenger is Luke O’Herlihy, with the forward scoring 0-28 (1 two-pointer, 2 two-point frees, 0-9 frees) across the four games. Despite playing 50% of the minutes that the St Michael’s man has, Sherlock remains three points ahead with 0-31.

That 0-31 includes five two-point frees, four two pointers from play, four frees and nine white flags from play. He’s been phenomenal in the two games he has been fit to take part in.

Sherlock’s supporting act within the Barrs has been Cillian Myers Murray, though they’ve only played together once in four. Myers Murray – who carries the nickname ‘Turbo’ – has 1-19 (2 two-point frees, 1 two-pointer, 6 frees).

Despite what Myers Murray has done in Sherlock’s absence, Steven remains the Barrs’ top scorer from play with 0-17 in two games.

For league leaders Clonakilty it’s a similar situation – Conor Daly has got 3-13 (0-4 frees) after four rounds and is also their top scorer from play with his tally of 3-9, but fellow goal threat Liam Griffin is not far behind. He’s managed a staggering 4-5 from play this year.

Where St Michael’s fall down is the absence of any real danger to partner O’Herlihy. Adam Hennessy has done well to pick up 0-10 including two two-pointers, but O’Herlihy still has more from play so far this year with 0-15.

Nemo Rangers are quite the opposite of Michael’s. No player has scored more than seven points from play but Conor Horgan, Colm Kiely and Ciaran Dalton have all got two goals each, hence Nemo occupying third in the table.

Newcestown are the other team with eight goals, joining Clon and Nemo at the top of the green flag chart, with Niall Kelly’s 2-9 (1 two-pointer, 0-2 frees) the most anyone in red and yellow has managed.

Eddie Kenneally and Richard O’Sullivan are second and third, with 2-5 (2-3 from play) and 0-9 (0-8 from play) respectively.

Cill na Martra’s Jason Mac Cárthaigh is the only other player besides Sherlock and O’Herlihy to score at least 20 points, but of his 0-20 only one effort came from play, a two pointer he kicked against Carrigaline.

Shane Ó Duinnín has been the best player for the Gaeltacht outfit from play, with his personal tally of 2-7 the most of anyone. Seán Ó Foirreidh is not far behind with his 1-7 (including one two-pointer).

Michael Hurley is the fourth highest scorer in the league and leads the way for Castlehaven, both from placed balls and play. While only 2-5 of his 2-18 have come from in play situations, he’s still comfortably ahead of Sean Browne and Kevin O’Donovan, with 1-3 each.

Scoring has been a problem for the Haven so far, and they’re too reliant on Hurley.

Douglas’s problem is worse though. Conor Russell is their top scorer with 1-9 in four games, enough to rank him 14th highest among the Division 1 top scorers. His 1-5 from play is also the best anyone in Douglas has managed so far.

Kevin Shanahan has 0-6 from play while Conor Kingston has 0-4. The team have been dogged with injuries in the first couple of months.

That only leaves the bottom two, Éire Óg and Carrigaline. Brian Hurley has top scored for Éire Óg with 2-9, and his 2-6 from play is also the highest of any one individual.

Rían O’Flynn isn’t out of reach with 0-10 from play, but to be fair to the Ovens outfit they have had 15 different scorers, more than every other team except Clon – who also have 15.

Carrigaline’s Kevin O’Reilly is on top in both metrics for the Carrigdhoun club, with a scoring total of 2-9 (0-3 frees). Niall Coakley and Brian Coakley combine for 0-25 with six orange flags within that.
