At their first meeting of the new season Seandún (City Division) GAA made their championship draws for their Junior A, B, and C grades.

At their AGM at the end of last season, the clubs asked the officers of the board to look at the format of the championship for 2025 and possibly look at mirroring the county board one.

With that in mind, a meeting was held recently with club delegates and after some discussion, a group format was agreed for the coming season.

At Junior A and B level, it means they move away from the ‘backdoor’ style to having groups where all sides will get a number of games to try to progress to the knockout stages.

This is the first time they have tried this and last Monday, secretary Eddie Murphy, said there would be a bit of trial and error this season as the board and clubs get used to this format.

The group stage winners will go straight through to the semi-finals. So in the championships with four groups, they will automatically make up the semi-finalists.

However, in the Junior A hurling championship, the format will be slightly different.

There are three groups so the winners will automatically go into the semis. To make up the fourth semi-finalists the clubs and officers agreed the following games.

The second-placed team in Group 3 (which only has three teams) will play one of the second placed teams in Groups 1 or 2.

Who they play will be determined by scoring difference or points (this will be finalised in the coming weeks) and it will be the lower team of the two on this method.

The winners of that game will then play the higher placed second team from Group 1 or 2 in a preliminary quarter-final to see who makes up the fourth semi-finalist.

This was discussed by the clubs and all have agreed on this now for the coming season.

In the Junior A football championship it will be slightly different. Second-placed teams in Groups 2 and 3 will play off to play the second-placed team in Group 1 in the preliminary quarter-final.

The winner will then go into the semi-final.

For this season the Junior C championship will stay with the ‘backdoor’ system but will be looked at for 2026.
