Sarsfields to name their club grounds after the legendary Teddy McCarthy

Sarsfields will honour its famous son by naming their club grounds in honour of Teddy McCarthy next year.
The decision was unanimously passed at their AGM on Wednesday night with the naming of Riverstown to officially kick in on Saturday, April 5 when the club will hold an event remembering the great Teddy Mac by also erecting a statue of the Cork GAA legend on the club grounds.

McCarthy passed away suddenly in June 2023 at the age of 57. His achievement of winning All-Ireland senior hurling and football medals in 1990, one never achieved before then and almost certain never to be matched, means he will always be remembered on Leeside.
High fielding was Teddy’s greatest strength and a photo that demonstrates that was taken by Des Barry during the 1993 league final against Wexford. That pose will be replicated to provide an everlasting memorial outside Sarsfields clubhouse.

Sarsfields chairman Keith Mulcahy, speaking to The Echo on Thursday afternoon, confirmed the news and spoke of his delight of naming the club grounds after such a legend.
“Yes, personally, I am thrilled because Teddy was my idol and my hero growing up. Everyone in Sars felt it was the right time especially with the statue going up next year. It will be all tied in together. We will sit down shortly and sort out the wording of the new grounds whether it will be the Teddy McCarthy Park or Teddy McCarthy Sportsground. We will sit down as a club and finalise it.
“Teddy played 90% of his hurling and football in Riverstown. It was his home. He grew up only a couple of yards up the road. It’s the right thing to do. People will be calling Riverstown the Teddy McCarthy Park or whatever name we come up with, which I think is fantastic. I am really excited and delighted that we got it over the line at our AGM on Wednesday.”

Teddy is no doubt smiling down from above with what Sarsfields have achieved in the last couple of years, winning the Cork Premier SHC in 2023, the Munster championship for the first time last Sunday week after a famous win over Ballygunner in the final and now they are the Munster club of the year.
Sarsfields All-Ireland semi-final is down for decision this Sunday against Slaughtneil of Derry in Newbridge at 1.30pm.
