Kenmare only needed a point to guarantee them top spot from this Corn Uí Mhuirí Group 4 meeting with Hammies on the 4G surface at Banteer this afternoon.

But they were beaten by a hungrier and better side on the day, who dominated for long periods.

Hammies now top the table on five points and go straight to the quarter-finals, while Kenmare will be involved in the preliminary quarters in two weeks. This result now makes the Clonakilty CS meeting with Bishopstown on Monday a dead rubber.

Bandon got off to a flyer when they fired over two points inside the opening two minutes thanks to fine efforts from Oisin McCarthy and Kevin Hannon after he forced a turnover from a short Kenmare kick-out. Kenmare were slow to get going with Bandon ravenous in every tackle.

Matters got worse for the Kerry side in the sixth minute when a long ball from centre-back Jack Cullinane was not dealt with and Sean Murphy found the net with a deft overhead flick.

Cathal Kelleher grabbed a Kenmare goal but Oisin McCarthy and a free from Humphrey Canty saw the sides level at 1-4 apiece before Donnacha O’Sullivan powered Kenmare in front again.

Bandon added three late first points from McCarthy, Charlie Twomey and Luke Casey, to lead 1-7 to 1-5 at the interval.

Bandon thanks to points from McCarthy and Hannon early in the second half moved five clear but Kenmare leveled the contest after a 50th minute Jack O’Sullivan goal.

However the Hammies were not to be denied and three late points from Hannon, Cullinane and Sean Murphy saw them win by three and now can look forward to January.
