Sara Byrne has been selected to play in the 2024 Curtis Cup.

The 23-year-old Douglas golfer was selected by Caitriona Matthew for the GB&I team to face the US in Sunningdale at the end of this month.

Byrne is one of eight players, and she is joined by Aine Donegan and Beth Coulter as one of three Irish players. She becomes the first Cork player to be selected on a Curtis Cup team since Claire Coughlan Ryan in 2006.

Sara completed her four years at the University of Miami earlier this year and has been having a very successful season. She was named in the 2024 Second Team All-American and has represented Ireland in both the Arnold Palmer Cup at Lahinch and in the European Ladies’ Team Championship in Spain.

In 2023, she won the Irish Women’s Close Championship, earned low amateur honours in the KPMG Women’s Irish Open and represented Ireland in the Women’s World Amateur Team Championship in Abu Dhabi.

Earlier this week she was named on the Irish team for the Home Internationals which take place in Scotland next week. Byrne had targeted the Curtis Cup from the start of the year. She was a spectator at the event in Dun Laoghaire in 2016, which was the last time that GB&I beat the US.

In 2019 and 2021 team captain Catriona Matthew drove Europe to consecutive Solheim Cup wins over the United States of America as captain. The Scot leads the Great Britain and Ireland team for the first time and aims to join a small group of victorious GB&I Captains.
