Bishopstown 6-10 Éire Óg 1-11

Bishopstown hit six goals against Éire Óg for a dominant win in the opening round of the Premier 1 Minor Football Championship in Bishopstown on Wednesday evening.

Having gone unbeaten throughout their league campaign the Town were full value for their win, scoring five goals in the second half.

Against the slight breeze Éire Óg started well, kicking the first three scores, but Bishopstown gathered control and took the lead after 10 minutes when Bill Cahill hit the opening goal, and they managed to stay in front for the rest of the half.

Éire Óg played some good football in the opening period and were right in the game, but Bishopstown swapped wing-forward Callum Caplice with midfielder Gary Holland – a move that certainly changed the game as he scored 2-1 inside the first 10 minutes of the second half, which put the game out of reach.

Though the hosts were ahead at the break it was a frustrating first half for Bishopstown, as they let three potential goal chances go to waste and only had a three point lead.

Éire Óg were quick on the restart but a wayward handpass killed their chance at an equalising goal, and the Town went up the other end and got their second, with Holland making a superb run before finishing.

His shot was well caught by corner back Cillian Murphy, but the referee deemed it over the line and they doubled their lead.

Éire Óg fought on and a great run from Clifford earned a free that was converted by Galvin, but Holland struck again with his second goal. It was a fine curling finish but Éire Óg’s defence made it too easy – and he put Bishopstown eight in front after 35 minutes.

Another score for Holland made it a nine point gap and they found the back of the net again through wing back Odhran Foley in the 44th minute.

Éire Óg fought on but struggled to convert their chances going forward, and were again punished by Bishopstown in the 48th minute, this time as Jack Tompkins got the finish, but it was a great team move involving Cahill and Foley, with the latter making the unselfish handpass to Tompkins who had a free shot at goal.

The visitors continued to kick points, including an impressive one for Sean Murphy, but the game was long over – and their fortunes were made even worse when Cillian Murray got the sixth Bishopstown goal in the 51st minute.

Substitute Ethan Hyde did get one back for the Ovens side, but with only five minutes to go his goal was little more than a consolation, and the hosts finished 14-point winners.

Johnny Galvin’s free got the visitors in front after 40 seconds, before Sean Hurley and Darragh Clifford followed up with a couple of points. The latter’s was particularly impressive, as Clifford broke through three tackles before splitting the posts from close range.

Bishopstown’s Caplice and Neil Crowley got them back into it with points from close range, and in the 10th minute they struck for a goal, with Crowley assisting Bill Cahill for the simple finish.

The Town were sharper defensively, with Harry Wixted making a good block on Galvin, while Holland pointed before forcing a turnover from Clifford to assist Cillian Murray. His point left a goal between the teams after 15 minutes.
