Clyda Rovers will be without their star player Conor Corbett this weekend.

The North Cork club open their McCarthy Insurance Group SAFC Group 3 campaign on Saturday against Bishopstown in Blarney at 5.30pm. Corbett is currently in Chicago since the Cork footballers exit from the championship after defeat to Louth in the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final over four weeks ago.

Corbett's absence will be a significant blow for a side that have struggled in recent times. After reaching the last four in 2022, Clyda Rovers finished third in their respective group last year. Despite Clyda failing to make the knockout stages, Corbett still finished in the top ten when it came to top scorers as he ended up with 1-11 in three matches. The forward was joint tenth with Kevin Davis of O’Donovan Rossa and Dohenys’ Mark Buckley.

The Mourneabbey based outfit have struggled in 2024, losing all nine games in the Division 2 football league. Saturday’s game is a massive one against Bishopstown, a match that both sides would have targeted when the draws were made last December.

Clyda Rovers second group game is on Sunday, August 18 against Knocknagree in Ballyclough at 4pm and it’s expected that the forward will also be absent for that one but Corbett is set to be available for the final group outing on Sunday, September 15 against Newmarket also in Ballyclough at 2pm.

Meanwhile, Brian Hurley is back and ready to go for reigning champions Castlehaven for Saturday’s Premier SFC Group 2 clash against Clonakilty in Rosscarbery at 3.30pm. The Cork football captain had been in America for the last few weeks, having struggled with a hamstring injury before that.

Conor Cahalane will be absent for the Haven for the opening round battle with Clon after suffering a hand injury last week. In fact, Cahalane is likely to spend the next four to six weeks on the sidelines. Cahalane was arguably one of Castlehaven's best players last season as they won the county and Munster titles.
