Glen Rovers collected their second silverware of the season as they defeated Douglas to claim the O’Connor’s Butchers and Foodhall Craobh Rua Cup at Ballinlough. 

This is to add to the AOS Security Seandún Junior Hurling League 2 title.

The Blackpool side had 1-5 on the board, as wayward shooting was proving to be costly for Douglas. 

Both sides got a point each from penalties in the second quarter, while the Blackpool side’s second goal, early in the second half was to prove decisive.

James Maher opened the scoring for Glen Rovers with a point from play, within two minutes of the throw-in.

Glen Rovers continued to have Douglas pinned back as Eric Healy drilled home a goal from the edge of the Douglas square.

Conor Egan, Daniel Savage and Healy each added points from play for Glen Rovers. 

James Maher converted a 65 to give Glen Rovers a lead of 1-5 to 0-0.

Douglas began to turn the screw approaching the second quarter, with two points from play by Sean Barron. 

Brian Maher also got a point from play, and he converted a 65 to reduce the margin to four points.

Midway through the opening half, Glen Rovers were awarded a penalty, from which James Maher scored a point.

The Blackpool side outscored Douglas 0-4 to 0-2, before Douglas were awarded a penalty. Doyle pointed in the 26th minute.

James Maher got Glen Rovers’ first score from a placed-ball and Cormac Reddington replied with a point from play for Douglas. 

This gave Glen Rovers a 1-11 to 0-8 interval lead.

Within two minutes of the resumption, Kevin McCarthy got Glen Rovers’ second goal from the corner of the Douglas square, to end the game as a contest.

David Cuthbert responded with a goal for Douglas in the 38th minute, before they were outscored by seven points to three.
