DISAPPOINTMENT for Ballincollig’s Coláiste Choilm in the Corn Liam Uí Uigínn Munster U17 B football championship final after losing out to Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine Kenmare at Banteer on Thursday afternoon.

Joe Dennehy’s side came into this one bristling with confidence after a fantastic semi-final victory over a fancied Mercy Mounthawk Tralee side on a scoreline of 3-13 to 2-9 three weeks ago. The youngsters did perform very well once again, but unfortunately came up against a team who were just that bit more efficient.

It’s a learning experience which should stand to the group going forward.

In front of a large crowd with both sides well backed, Kenmare, managed by Kerry star Seanie O’Shea, who made a dream start with 1-1 without reply. The goal after four minutes was scored by Micheál O’Mahony. After dominating most of the play in the early stages which yielded four wides, Coláiste Choilm goaled after 10 minutes as Seán Murphy’s effort flew into the top corner.

Kenmare immediately replied with their second goal through Neal O’Shea, 2-1 to 1-0 after 13 minutes. O’Shea pointed for Kenmare before Coláiste Choilm scored a brilliant goal from Matthew Thompson on 15 minutes after a great assist by Cian O’Connor. A Danny Miskella free registered Coláiste Choilm’s first point with 13 minutes to the break, 2-2 to 2-1.

It was raining goals in a wide-open game. Kenmare fired 1-1 without reply with David Grebowiec netting. The sides then traded goals, Miskella scoring for Coláiste Choilm and O’Shea for Kenmare, 4-3 to 3-1 after 24 minutes.

Coláiste Choilm kicked the last four points of the half as they trailed by just one at half-time, 4-3 to 3-5.

On the resumption, Kenmare got in for a goal 20 seconds in when Grebowiec netted his second. The goals dried up for a small while as Coláiste Choilm kicked two of the next three points, 5-4 to 3-7 after 37 minutes before it was all level five minutes later, captain Kevin O’Leary billowing the back of the net.

The Ballincollig school started to take control as they kicked four of the next six points to lead 4-11 to 5-6 after 53 minutes. Sub Peter Rose with two beauties.

Two quickfire points drew Kenmare level with two minutes remaining before they scored 1-2 without reply, O’Shea sealing the deal for the Kerry school with the goal.

Coláiste Choilm did raise a green flag deep in added time when Miskella got a touch in a crowded square, but the full-time whistle sounded seconds later.
