Five more Cork basketball legends inducted into the Hall of Fame

Chairman of the board Willie McCarthy commended all recipients on and thanked them for their contributions they gave to the sport over many decades.

THERE was a nostalgic presentation at the recent Cork County Men’s Board Billy Kelly tournament when five more gentlemen who are basketball legends in their own right were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Chairman of the board Willie McCarthy commended all recipients on and thanked them for their contributions they gave to the sport over many decades.

“As a board we are delighted to be remembering such valuable gentlemen that gave their lives to our sport and its important that we never forget them.

“Remember all five not alone had a major influence on Cork basketball but also to the various clubs they represented.

“They have all given a lifetime of service to the sport and I don’t think basketball would be as strong today without their involvement. He said.

It was nice to see the Gurranabraher Parochial Hall packed for the presentation as one of the recipients the late John Hayes was represented by nephews John and Pat Lucey with niece Rachael Lyons.

Hall of Fame: 

John Hayes (Neptune) 

John Hayes started his coaching career with Neptune before moving on to Iona Boys club.

Further coaching stints with Wolfe Tones, Celtics and GH74 before joining the Cork Basketball where he served in many positions for over 30 years.

Never a man shy of shooting from the hip for the betterment of the sport his induction into the Hall of Fame is fitting for his incredible work over five decades.

Joe Ahern (Neptune).

Joe is another popular choice as he is another man who continues to contribute to the sport travelling to many venues in the county to officiate.

It was at De Paul Boys club that Joe started his love for basketball before moving to Iona Boys club Blarney Street with Neptune his club over the last 40 plus years.

Vincent Murphy (Kanturk).

Kanturk stalwart the late Vincent Murphy gave his life to the club over many years as he helped build the club from scratch.

Now competing at many levels the club continues to grow and his legacy will never be forgotten by the people who had the pleasure to know him.

Michael O’Sullivan (Blue Demons).

Blue Demons one of the founding members of Blue Demons served as treasurer for 52 years at the Sunday’s Well club.

Michael always had the club at heart and despite now in retirement continues to support them.

Pat Dwyer (Skibbereen).

The sport in west Cork has progressed since the founding of Skibbereen basketball club where Pat Dwyer still remains an active member.

Pat continues to work for the betterment of all members involved in the club and his inception to the Hall of Fame is testament to his hard work.
