The Blue Demons Basketball Club is again staging their Golf Classic at the prestigious Monkstown Golf Club on Thursday and Friday, June 18-19th.

This year’s classic is the 31st staging of the event that was inaugurated in 1995 and has been presented every June with the exception of 2020 due to Covid 19.

The classic has grown continuously and up to 50 teams participating for the much- coveted prizes it promises to be a memorable occasion.

Gurranabraher Credit Union are once again the main sponsor, with Solar energy provider PV Gen also coming on board sponsoring the prizes, and technology company Connected Manufacturing assisting financially.

The launch of the Classic took place at the Gurranabraher Credit Union with marketing manager Claire Hosford praising Blue Demons for keeping this event running over 31 years.

“Blue Demons put in serious work getting this Golf classic organised and we in the Gurranabraher Credit Union recognise their efforts that helps the young people in our community,” said Claire.

Indeed, Gurranabraher Credit Union are an integral part of many sporting organisations and will hopefully continue to help them in the coming years.

“Sport is very much part of Cork and as a Credit Union we commend the efforts of the many volunteers that work hard in ensuring youth are catered for in all sports,” added Claire Hosford.

The Blue Demons Basketball Club recently marked their 60th anniversary and are the most successful senior national club team within the Basketball Ireland family.

The club has a very strong juvenile section, and a considerable percentage of the proceeds garnered from the running of the Golf Classic is given directly to the club juvenile management committee.

For founding member Jim Dineen, the Golf Classic is a crucial fundraiser to a club who cater for players right from nursery level.

“Credit to my fellow committee members and of course our sponsors who without their generosity this would be a far harder task.

“Many thanks to our main sponsors Gurranabraher Credit Union and PV Gen but also to the companies who gave Tee boxes and of course all the participants who ensure we have a day to remember for our club,” said Jim Dineen.

The Golf Classic is now organised in memory of Peter Coughlan a great club stalwart of many years, as player, a coach, a club officer and latterly as one of the original managers of the Golf Classic until his passing in 2018.

Should you wish to enter a team or support the club financially through Tee Box and Green sponsorship this can be done through email bluedemonsgolfclassic@gmail.com or contacting any of the following Shane Coughlan, Dan Byrne, James Barrett, Don Coughlan, Jim Dineen, or Aidan Horgan.
