IT was a night to remember at the Accor Arena in Paris last weekend, not just for the fighters or the sport of Mixed Martial Arts but also for Cork’s very own Derek Hickey.
In what was described as the largest MMA event in French history, with a roaring crowd of 20,000 spectators, Hickey solidified his position as one of the sport's elite officials.
The Professional Fighters League (PFL) event, which saw tickets sell out within a mere 20 minutes, was marked by Hickey's expert officiating of four high-stakes bouts.
The Cork native, in a display of profound composure, oversaw three first-round finishes — a kneebar, a KO, and a Von Flue choke.
His performance in the intense atmosphere was nothing short of exemplary, proving once more why he is held in such high regard internationally.
Hickey’s journey from a local Cork enthusiast to an internationally recognized MMA referee is a source of pride for the community.
It began 13 years ago at SBG Cork and has since seen him rise through the ranks. Starting with officiating novice bouts, Hickey took a significant step forward in 2016 by completing an international officials course in Belfast, under the guidance of Marc Goddard, the revered UFC referee.
His ascent continued as he became a fixture in the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) circuit, officiating at five world championships, and earning the accolade of World Official of the Year in 2019.
This recognition is akin to an Olympic gold for officiating and is testament to his profound understanding of the sport and his unwavering commitment.
This latest event in Paris, however, stands as a peak in his career thus far — it was not only about the scale but also the quality of performance that Derek delivered under the bright lights of the packed venue.
Reflecting on his experience, Hickey shared that the days leading up to the PFL were nerve-racking. Yet, sage advice from Goddard, his mentor, reminded him to treat the event with the calm and focus he has become known for.
Hickey stepped into the cage, not as a man dwarfed by the sea of faces but as an arbiter of fairness, fixated solely on the fighters' safety and the integrity of the sport.
