Mungret Regional 1 (after extra time)
CARRIGALINE advanced to the JAKO Ireland Munster Youth Cup quarter-finals after a hard-fought win over Limerick side Mungret Regional at Ballea Park.
The reward for this superb performance is another home fixture against another Limerick side Fairview Rangers this Sunday at 4.30pm.
There was very little between these both sides in what was a very competitive game with the hosts shading the first half courtesy of a Sean Nolan goal.
The Limerick outfit were by far the better side in the second half and dominated for large periods. However, they had to wait until five minutes remaining to equalise with a Samuel Killing goal to take the tie to extra time.
The pattern changed dramatically in the 94th minute when Mungret’s marquee player Conor O’Longaigh had to go off injured. Carrigaline then took the initiative and when Cian Spillane, who put in a man-of-the-match display, delivered a delightful cross late in the first half of extra time, Calum Lamda was at the far post to power his header in.

The visitors had the first sight of goal in the opening four minutes of the game when O’Longaigh showed his speed to stride past two defenders but his effort couldn’t beat Robert Barry. With Spillane stretching the Mungret back four at every opportunity Carrigaline settled. And when he whipped in a dangerous cross in the 16th minute, Dion Davidson showed great skill to control the ball but shot over.
They made their pressure tell in the 24th minute. Spillane sent in a good delivery for Rob Walker to head across the box and Sean Nolan powered his header into the roof of the net.
Mungret made a bright to the second half, with the impressive Colin Kinehan pulling the strings in the middle. Barry was called into action in the 67th minute when he had to make a fingertip save from O’Longaigh after latching on to a Kinehan pass.
They continued to put Carrig on the back foot and got a deserved equaliser in the 85th minute when Samuel scored from close range.
Both sides started extra time a little cagey, however, when Cian Spillane chased a hopeful ball down the left wing in the 97th minute, he whipped in a wonderful cross for Callum Landa to head home for the winning goal.
