TWO-TIME All-Star defender Aidan O’Mahony is the new manager of the Macroom premier intermediate football team.

The Kerry man is familiar with the football scene in Cork and managed Millstreet back in 2017 and 2018 when they were in the intermediate ranks. The Rathmore native has carved out an interesting and promising career in managing and coaching. O’Mahony took charge of the MTU, Kerry side, in the Sigerson Cup in 2022 and led them all the way to the semi-finals of the famous third-level competition, in which they lost out to eventual champions NUI Galway.

O'Mahony was at the helm of the Dr Crokes senior team this year, but not the code you would have expected, he was manager of their hurling outfit where he left that role recently.

Colman Corrigan, who was on the Cork senior football panel that won the All-Ireland title in 1990, is set to be part of the new management ticket as Macroom aim to improve on what has been a challenging number of years for the team. Corrigan, who is Macroom born and bred, was a selector when the Mid-Cork side won the IFC crown in 2010.

The team in green and white haven’t reached the business end of the PIFC since 2017 when they lost to Newmarket at the quarter-final juncture. Since the championship group stage format was introduced in 2020, Macroom have failed to qualify for the knockout stages.

The proud Muskerry club, with 10 top flight football titles to their name, had to beat Na Piarsaigh this year in the PIFC relegation playoff to avoid slipping down into the fourth tier.

O’Mahony will discover Macroom’s championship group stage opponents for 2024 tomorrow night when the draws are made at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
