FIVE-GOAL Canovee humiliated Lisgoold in their Cork Junior A FC quarter final, securing a spot in the semi-final where they will now face Castlemagner. Dominant from start to finish, the three-time Cork Junior FC champions were untouchable on the night.

Lisgoold, having just won their first East Cork Junior A title were no match for Canovee and suffered a brutal defeat as a result in Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday evening.

Canovee started quickly, counterattacking as Lisgoold’s Kieran Cashman was dispossessed. Eoghan Lehane picked up the ball at the 65 and surged forward, making a run inside the Lisgoold 13 before unleashing a powerful strike into the bottom corner.

Captain James Moynihan pointed in the 3rd minute, before John Cashman hit one back for the east Cork champions. Canovee replied with prowess, as a brilliant piece of attacking play set Conor O’Neill up and he fisted it over the bar.

Two frees from Jack Kelleher put Canovee 1-4 to 0-1 ahead after 9 minutes. Lisgoold had several half chances in the early stages but were wasteful, and the 2008 All Ireland JFC winners punished them for it, with Kelleher and Conor Dodd pointing from play to extend their lead to eight.

Darragh McMahon and Dara Cronin split the posts to take them further in front, but Cashman responded with a well taken point.

Kelleher missed a brilliant one-on-one chance to net their second as Lisgoold’s Wayne Kingston produced a good stop, but he was called into action again within two minutes.

Aidan Murphy sent Kelleher through on goal, but the Canovee forward was brought down for a penalty. Moynihan shot for the bottom corner, but Kingston made a good save to turn it around for a 65.

Dodd converted, and they added another point to go 1-11 to 0-3 ahead at the break, and Kelleher scored again on the restart as Lisgoold struggled to deal with their pace.

Canovee finally broke through for a second goal when Dara Cronin smashed it across goal, leaving Kingston with no chance. They added a third 2 minutes later as four slick handpasses put McMahon through on goal.

The corner-forward lost his footing, but another quick handpass to Moynihan ensured the third, as he finished from close range.

Conor O’Neill played it to Mark Healy as he made no mistake from close range to add a fourth goal in the 47th minute, and things got even worse for Lisgoold when Darren Moynihan’s initial effort was blocked, but he reacted superbly to score the follow up, putting them a staggering 24 points ahead after a fifth goal.

Their fourth and fifth goals were separated by a brilliant point from Mark Hegarty, and the Lisgoold centre back added another, before Cian Scannell got their sixth score on the board after 59 minutes, but it meant nothing as Canovee held on for a 22-point win.
