St Vincent’s 4-8 Glanmire 2-13

St Vincent’s are through to the quarter-finals of the Bon Secours IAFC after their win over Glanmire at Mayfield on Saturday.

And they had their Cork player Blake Murphy, whose nine-minute hat-trick in the second half turned the game on its head, to thank.

After a relatively quiet first half by his standards, he burst into the game after the restart and was simply outstanding as he led the Glanmire defence a merry dance. But it wasn’t just Murphy they have to thank for their win with Shane Duggan, Anthony O’Callaghan and Anthony Harte also impressing.

Daniel Molden opened the scoring for Glanmire and Cian O’Donovan added a second as they led by two after four minutes

Murphy got them off the mark after seven minutes, with David O’Brien replying at the other end. Jeremy Kingston made it 0-4 to 0-1 in favour of Glanmire before they raised a green flag.

Cathal McCarthy won back possession from a Vincent’s kick-out and he played David Lynch in who gave Darragh Clarke no chance of saving.

Murphy pulled a point back from a free, with Lynch raising a white flag for Glanmire.

With 20 minutes gone Vincent’s were unlucky not to raise a green flag after Murphy’s effort came back off the crossbar after he had beaten several players to set up the chance.

However a minute later and they did find the back of the net when Patrick O’Sullivan and Shane Duggan combined to set up Benjamin Long, to make it 1-5 to 1-2.

McCarthy and Lynch, from a 45, replied for Glanmire, before Murphy saw another effort come back off the post and the danger was cleared.

McCarthy increased Glanmire’s lead, but two late points from frees by Murphy saw Vincent’s trailing by 1-8 to 1-4 at half-time.

McCarthy got the first score of the second half before Murphy burst into life.

His first goal came after 33 minutes when he played a quick free to Long and he played it back for Murphy to raise a green flag.

He added a point and O’Sullivan also raised a white flag to make it 2-6 to 1-9. With 37 minutes gone, Murphy got his second goal with his initial effort saved by Colin Kingston, but he was first to the rebound to score.

Molden pulled a point back for Glanmire but with 42 minutes played Murphy completed his hat-trick, this time O’Sullivan setting him up, to make it 4-6 to 1-10.

Credit Glanmire they kept going with points from Molden and O’Donovan reducing the deficit.

With 10 minutes to go they were right back in it when McCarthy pounced on a defence mistake to level it, 2-12 to 4-6. Molden put them in front, but Murphy scored from a free to see the level again going into injury time.
