St Colman’s College 2-16

CHRISTIANS produced a rousing fourth quarter to claim their first Dr O’Callaghan Cup at the 4G pitch in Páirc Uí Chaoimh yesterday.

They overturned an eight-point deficit into a six-point win as they struck an unanswered 2-8 in those closing 15 minutes plus six of injury.

St Colman’s did the early running. With the breeze behind them, their lead was 1-12 to 0-9 at the break, a goal from David Morrison after just six minutes and a selection of points by Eoin Carey, Brian Roche, James Kearney and David Lardner giving them the upper hand.

When Morrison finished his second goal after the interval, it didn’t look good for CBC. The introduction of fresh legs off the bench — especially Padraig Power who missed out through illness — appeared to rouse their teammates.

Jack Cahalane kickstarted the revival with his 46th minute goal. Goalkeeper Cian Long blasted home a penalty four minutes later following a foul on Pádraig Power. And when Declan Hanlon nailed one of his four points, the sides were level 2-16 apiece.

In the remaining 10 minutes, there was no let-up as Christians remained firmly in the driving seat firing another six points, from Iarlaith Daly, Kevin Finn, Hanlon, Power, Owen McCarthy and Barrett, transforming an eight-point deficit into a six-point win.
