A 60-year-old sports coach has been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl at a sports club in Cork in 2022.

Sergeant Paul Cogan charged him with sexually assaulting the girl at the sports club on a date between May 1 and July 1, 2022.

The accused man cannot be named to protect the identity of the complainant.

Sgt Cogan said there was no objection to bail on a number of conditions, including that the man would sign on at his local Garda station in the city every Tuesday between 9am and 9pm, have no contact with the complainant either directly or indirectly, including by social media.

They also required that he would notify them of any change of address or any travel plans including travel abroad.

Sgt John Dineen said the DPP had directed trial by indictment at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.

Judge David Waters remanded the accused on bail until December 3.

Defence solicitor Aoife Buttimer said her client was agreeable to the bail conditions, but he would not be entering a signed plea of guilty, and that a book of evidence would be required.
