Man charged with 119 counts of indecent assault against two boys over a 10-year period

Judge David Waters remanded the 62-year-old defendant on bail until November 17.

Almost 120 indecent assault charges related to two boys over a 10-year period were brought against a 62-year-old man.

Detective Sgt Ailish Murphy formally arrested the accused man and charged him with the 119 counts.

Det Sgt Murphy testified at Cork District Court that she cautioned the defendant that he did not have to say anything, but that whatever he might say would be taken down and given in evidence.

He made no reply to the charges.

Sgt Gearóid Davis said the DPP directed trial by indictment at Cork Circuit Criminal Court, or the signing of pleas of guilty at the district court for sentencing at the circuit court.

There was no objection to bail on conditions. He is to have no contact, directly or indirectly, with the two complainants in the case, retain his phone number, and notify gardaí of any change of address.

The complainants are now in their 40s.

The alleged offences occurred between January 1980 and June 1990.

Indecent assault is the name given to sexual assault charges prior to 1990. In relation to the counts, 41 refer to one of the boys, and 78 relate to the second boy.

The parties to the case, who are related, cannot be identified. Defence solicitor, Stephen Cotter, applied for a copy of the memo of interview the accused had with gardaí.

Judge David Waters remanded the 62-year-old on bail until November 17.
