Lack of progress on proposed northside greenway project criticised by Cork city councillor

"It is time for Cork City Council and the Government /NTA to prioritise this project, set out a clear delivery timetable and finally get the greenway built," Labour councillor John Maher said.

A local councillor has criticised the lack of progress on a proposed Mayfield to Glen greenway project.

The project entails active travel improvements between Blackpool and Tinkers Cross in The Glen and Mayfield areas, the provision of a continuous pedestrian and cycle route, and permeability pedestrian and cycle links into adjacent communities.

At a recent meeting of Cork City Council, Labour councillor John Maher asked for an update on the greenway, and how much money has been allocated from the National Transport Authority (NTA) and spent on project.

Edith Roberts, the council’s acting director of infrastructure development, said: “The preliminary design of The Glen to Mayfield Walking and Cycling scheme is currently being prepared.

“Consultants appointed to the project have been identifying the route alignments with proposed connections to residential estates and other local amenities.”

She said that the total expenditure on the scheme to date is €189,285, and the scheme was allocated €50,000 funding in 2026 from the NTA.

“The preliminary design is expected to be completed in the months, at which stage the updated details will be presented to local area members in advance of public consultation under the planning process,” said Ms Roberts

“It is expected that details of supporting funding for 2027 under the NTA Active Travel programme will be confirmed in late January/early February.”

Mr Maher told The Echo he was “very disappointed” by the response and lack of progress on the greenway.

“Ministers have announced funding year after year, yet we are now three years beyond the promised completion date with nothing delivered," Mr Maher said.

He said that the greenway could connect Mayfield, The Glen and Blackpool with the city centre, while linking into the Glanmire Greenway and the proposed Dunkettle - City Greenway.

“This is about more than a walking and cycling route. It is about connectivity, healthier communities and ensuring the northside receives its fair share of investment.

“There is a growing frustration that announcements have not translated into action, while the proposed prison extension continues to dominate attention in an area where there is significant local opposition.

“The people of Mayfield and The Glen deserve more than promises. The wait is over. It is time for Cork City Council and the Government /NTA to prioritise this project, set out a clear delivery timetable and finally get the greenway built.”
