The Cork Folk Festival returns this weekend for its 47th year, with events taking place across the city from Thursday to Sunday.

Launching the festival at Civic Trust House on Friday, Lord Mayor Damian Boylan said the event reflected his mayoral theme of ‘Be Sound’.

He said there would be plenty of opportunities to put that spirit into practice over the weekend, whether by welcoming someone who has come along on their own, encouraging a young performer, thanking a volunteer, or simply giving a singer the quiet attention they deserve.

“A festival like this gives us a reason to come into the city, meet friends, discover something new, and share an evening that we will remember,” Mr Boylan said.

Altan will headline the festival and the programme brings together an impressive gathering of musicians and singers.

Máirtín Ó Connor, Cathal Hayden, and Seamie O’Dowd will perform, while Jackie Daly and Matt Cranitch return.

Also appearing will be Scullion, John Spillane, Aoife Scott, and the Lee Valley String Band, among many others, while Mary Greene’s Gals at Play will bring together some gifted songwriters and performers.

One particular highlight will be Tuning the Radio, a concert celebrating 100 years of traditional music on Irish radio, curated by Peter Browne.
