Cork-based garda to run Lisbon Marathon in full uniform

A Cork-based garda is to run the Lisbon Marathon next month in his full uniform, to raise funds for the children’s unit at Cork University Hospital.

Emmet Long, who is stationed in Bishopstown, will take on the challenge in full Garda attire, including boots, a stab vest, utility belt, personal radio, pepper spray, handcuffs, and baton.

The 36-year-old will be joined on the start line in the Portuguese capital by his friend Paul Keating, who will be dressed in a bright-orange prison-style jumpsuit.

Last year, Mr Long became the first-ever serving garda to run a marathon in full uniform, when he completed the Cork City Marathon, raising more than €4,000 for the CUH children’s unit and the Little Blue Heroes charity.

Running a marathon in warm weather in full uniform is a challenging prospect.

“It’s going to be a lot different than running in shorts,” he said.

“But I’m more prepared than I was last year, and will be aiming for a time of about four and a half hours.”

Great way to give back

Both men have been inspired by their own children.

Mr Long said: “My son is six in December. He is fit and healthy and I’m at the peak of my own fitness levels. So this is a great way to give back.

“Both Paul and I are dads, and having our children is the best thing that’s ever happened to us.

“We love kids, and that’s the real reason we’re doing this, to support the children and families who need it most.”

Mr Keating, a father of one from Mallow, said: “We’ll be running together the whole way, but only as fast as the slowest person!

“I have the luxury of wearing runners. Emmet’s in for a slightly harder run.”

As well as being keen long-distance runners, Mr Long and psychotherapist Mr Keating are also business partners.

They own gardafitnesspreparation.ie, a training-and-fitness company specifically designed for Garda applicants and serving members.

The two men aim to raise up to €10,000 for the CUH children’s ward.
