Cork City Council has launched its Irish Language Action Plan for 2026-2029, aimed at supporting and promoting the wider use of the language.

It includes a range of proposals, including to investigate and promote the establishment of a Cultúrlann (Irish language and culture community hub) in the city, and to explore the possibility of setting up suburban pop-up Gaeltachts and a city centre Gaeltacht.

Lord Mayor Damian Boylan said that the plan “encourages community engagement through events and activities promoting the visibility and use of the language”.

The launch of the document was followed by a panel discussion, facilitated by University of Ottawa Irish language instructor Siobhán Ní Chróinín, with contributions from GAA legend Seán Óg Ó hAilpín, Niall O’Keeffe from the council’s Local Enterprise Office and Laoise Nic Íomhar, Irish language development officer at Barr na gCnoc in Knocknaheeney.
