Public talk to set out case for the restoration of North Cork church 

With one of North Cork’s most recognisable churches facing an uncertain future, a public talk will set out the case for its restoration.

Christ Church, Fermoy, was designed by Abraham Hargrave the Elder, one of Cork’s most distinguished architects, and built in 1802.

The church is large and was built to accommodate the local parishioners and the large number of troops stationed at the nearby British Army barracks.

The building’s tall entrance was designed to admit, without dipping, the colours carried on military church parades.

A national monument, the building has deteriorated over the years, and parishioners are concerned for its future, given the area’s declining Church of Ireland community.

A committee has been established with the goal of restoring the building, and a grant has been sanctioned by the Heritage Council to produce a conservation management plan.

As part of Heritage Week, a free public talk entitled A Compelling Case to Restore Christ Church Fermoy - How Old Walls Work will be held at 2.30pm on Saturday, August 23, in Christ Church.
